Albert Wesker was the former chairman of Umbrella, holding regular meetings from his office in Tokyo via holograms, and heading the Umbrella Committee, even during the Global T-Virus pandemic. During the final confrontation in the Hive between Alice and Dr. Alexander Isaacs, Wesker is finally killed by the Red Queen after being fired from his position in Umbrella by Alicia Marcus.

Much like his game counterpart, Wesker is cold, calculating and ruthless.

History

Before Extinction

In 1995, Albert Wesker was hired by Umbrella. For years, Wesker worked as the loyal minion to Umbrella co-founder Dr. Alexander Isaacs; Wesker faithfully carried out his tasks, without so much as a complaint. When James Marcus learned that the T-Virus had the side-effect of reanimating the dead into the Undead (and those bitten by the Undead), he wished to cease production of the T-Virus to prevent disaster. On Isaacs's order, Wesker wrapped a plastic bag around James' head, killing him.

Isaacs soon held a meeting with the Umbrella board of directors, getting them to back his warped plan to save the Earth's resources in a warped "Noah's arc" reboot; the T-virus would be released, killing those not allied with Umbrella. While Isaacs, Alicia Marcus and the Umbrella High Command were put into cryostasis in the Hive, Wesker was made the Chairman of Umbrella.

The T-Virus pandemic was initiated, resulting in the mass decimation of humanity; however, it also had the unintended side-effect of destroying the ecosystem and mutating the wildlife. To combat these problems, Wesker charged a clone of Dr. Isaacs - J. Isaacs - with finding a way to domesticate the Undead, so Umbrella could return to the surface. At the same time, he had Umbrella Prime simulations used to understand the mutations. Project Alice remained at large after escaping the Detroit facility; without her, the only person who didn't lose her sense of self to the T-virus, progress was slow.

Wesker resided in the Umbrella Corporation HQ under Shibuya Square in Tokyo. Within five years of waiting for results from the clone, Wesker was beginning to lose his patience. Wesker also maintained contact with another clone of Dr. Isaacs, who was busy with destroying human settlements by leading the Undead to them and using Umbrella tanks to add in the destruction of defenses.

Extinction

"Doctor, that's an order."
— To Issacs about his actions

Wesker has a meeting with each of the leaders from the Umbrella facilities around the world. The news he gets is not good: Paris has lost 6 employees to the increasing biohazard and is down to 50% on their food supplies. London is down 17 employees to the biohazard and has only 28% on their food supplies left.

Albert Wesker was constantly at odds with J. Isaacs, whose obsession with Project Alice threatened to compromise his appointed task: domesticating the Undead. If his work did not show signs of improving, Wesker threatened to replace the doctor with someone else more capable Dr. Isaacs was not perturbed, however, Isaacs continued to create the Super Undead to hunt down and capture Alice, an operation that resulted in him being bitten and infected by one of his own creations.

Having disobeyed direct orders and forged Wesker's authorization, the chairman ordered that he be "liquidated" immediately. Isaacs' advanced infection transformed him into the first Tyrant, however, and he killed everyone inside the Nevada facility. After Isaacs' death at her hands, Alice interrupted a conference between Wesker and the other facility leaders and promised him that she intended to come after him, and that she'd be bringing "a few of her friends" along with her.

Afterlife

"Loyalty... Highly overrated."
— To Alice on Arcadia.

Alice and her clones attack the Umbrella headquarters in Tokyo and kill everyone in the facility. When alerted to the assault, Wesker orders all upper levels flooded with nerve gas to stem the tide of the clones, despite the many who were still locked in combat with them. When a security officer hesitates, Wesker shoots him with his Desert Eagle and inquires to any further questions against his order.

Two clones are killed by Wesker during the final gambit of the assault on the facility; one shot through the head mid fall, the other shot repeatedly in the chest at close range. The second died with two unpinned grenades in her hand, creating an explosion that sets the entire facility on alert.

Wounded, Wesker proceeds to escape in an Umbrella-issued aircraft; the remaining Alice clones attempted to shoot down the plane but to no avail. Wesker activates a "Purge" bomb that destroys the facility, vaporizing a large portion of Tokyo and killing the clones in the process. The real Alice is on board the helicopter however, and prepares to kill him. Acting quickly, Wesker injects Alice with a serum that destroys the T-cells in her body and renders her powerless.

Wesker reveals that he has injected himself with the T-Virus and displays superhuman strength and speed similar to Alice's. He overpowers her and seconds from certain death, Alice thanks him for making her "human again". Distracted, Wesker has no time to regain control of the unmanned aircraft before it crashes into a mountainside. Wesker is thought to have died in the crash, while Alice barely survives.

However, Wesker's new powers enable him to regenerate from his injuries, and he heads to the Umbrella ship, Arcadia, where he takes command and uses Umbrella's remaining satellites to track Alice. After escaping the Citadel Correctional Facility, Alice, Claire and Chris Redfield make their way to the Arcadia, now located in the Los Angeles harbor. There, they discover over 2,000 humans held in suspended animation for testing.

Upon releasing the survivors, Alice discovers two pods drenched in blood and follows the blood trail to Wesker. When she attempts to attack, he calls on two Cerberuses and an armed necrosing Bennett to hold her at bay. Wesker explains that the T-Virus is starting to overtake him and believes that eating fresh human tissue will keep it at bay, which is why the Arcadia crew abandoned ship three days prior.

However, if Wesker eats Alice, who had adapted to the T-Virus so well, her DNA will allow him to gain full control over himself. Alice tells him that she is "not on the menu" and kicks a tray full of scalpels at Wesker, who dodges all but one (which grazes his right cheek). Before Wesker can retaliate, he is confronted by Claire and Chris, prompting Alice to remind him that she promised to bring "friends".

Wesker removes his sunglasses, revealing his severely altered red eyes, and remarks that she "should've brought more". Wesker battles Chris and Claire, and his super strength and speed overpowers them easily. He traps them in holding tanks before focusing on Alice. Alice meanwhile killed the dogs and disarmed Bennett, but was pierced in the forearm with a scalpel. Wesker produces several mandible-like tentacles from his mouth and prepares to eat her, but Alice stabs him in the head with the scalpel covered in her blood, temporarily stunning him.

The Redfields continuously shoot at Wesker

Alice tries to retrieve her shotgun to finish the job when Bennett blocks her path. In turn, he is stopped by K-Mart, who knocks him out and tosses Alice the shotgun. Alice shoots Wesker in the head, blowing out the top right side of his skull. After Alice frees Claire and Chris, Wesker attempts to get up, but Chris pins him down with his foot. The two siblings unload their pistols onto Wesker at point blank range, leaving him temporarily dead.

They seal him and Bennett inside the chamber, as Wesker regenerates from his wounds and devours/kills Bennett before making his way to another chopper in order to escape. He activates another bomb that was placed on the Arcadia, believing it to still be on the ship. However, moments before detonation, he discovers the bomb hidden on the chopper. As the countdown continues, Wesker's eyes glow red with anger. The bomb detonates, destroying the helicopter. Soon after, an open parachute can be seen descending into the water, safely away from the explosion.

"I've given you back your gift. You were the only one to successfully bond with the T-Virus; the only one to fully realize their gift. You ARE the weapon."
— Wesker to Alice after injecting with the T-Virus again

Wesker survived the destruction of his transport plane after escaping from the freighter Arcadia. Due to Alice delaying the plan's ending (due to her constantly helping save people), Wesker decided to enact a new plan. Pretending to renounce his ties to the Umbrella Corporation, Wesker and his personal agent, Ada Wong, ended up rounding up what remained of the U.S. military and turned the White House in Washington, D.C. into a base for the "resistance' against Umbrella, which Wesker tricked everyone into thinking was now lead by the Red Queen.

When he received news that Alice had been captured after the attack on Arcadia and imprisoned in Umbrella Prime, Wesker tasked Ada with infiltrating the base and killing the security personal; in truth, he already had access to the base, but needed to make it look like he was hacking in. He then sent an extraction team consisting of Luther West, Leon Kennedy, Barry Burton, Sergei Vladimirand another man to retrieve Ada and Alice; the rescue looked genuine as he allowed them to blow up the intake vents to the base, ensuring a chain-reaction that would destroy Umbrella Prime. After Ada saves Alice, Wesker brings her up to speed; however, per his plan, the Red Queen terminates his transmission and delivers a threat to the survivors. With the exception of Ada, Alice and Leon, the team is wiped out; however, they also managed to free Jill Valentine from Umbrella's mind control and adopted a clone named Becky.

Wesker meets Alice again in person after she is brought to the Oval Office. He injects her with a watered-down version of the T-Virus, falsely claiming that she now had all her powers back. Wesker explains that she is THE weapon that humanity needs to win the war against the Red Queen. To further illustrate his point, Wesker takes Alice to the rooftop to show her the non-stop attacks from the T-virus abominations.

The Final Chapter

"I don't have to follow your orders. My loyalties are with him."
"I know. Albert Wesker... you're fired.
"
— Wesker has his immunity to the Red Queen's retribution revoked by Alicia

Immediately after the events of Retribution, Wesker betrays Alice. Though the methods used aren't shown, the second clone of Doctor Alexander Isaacs confirms and attributes the destruction of the White House to Wesker, as well as presumably all of Alice's allies who were present.

Wesker heads to The Hive to wait out the final phase of the plan in comfort. However, the Red Queen contacts Alice and tells her about the anti-virus. With the need to have the Red Queen appear to be in charge gone, Wesker takes back control of the Umbrella Corporation. Distrustful of the A.I. (who failed to kill Alice the first time), Wesker decides to manually operate Umbrella security (via voice command) against Alice, Claire Redfield, and their new allies.

17 months before the initial outbreak, Wesker attended a meeting where Dr. Isaacs told his plan of "cleansing" a dying Earth from overpopulation and global warming by wiping out most of humanity but keeping Umbrella employees and Umbrella High Command safe underground, with the vast majority of Umbrella, thousands of people, put under cryo-stasis; a Noah's Ark reset of sorts.

Wesker is loyal and this time subordinate to Dr. Isaacs, who is in fact the true owner of the Umbrella corporation despite Wesker's position as Chairman. He keeps the real Dr. Isaacs safe under cryo-stasis, the Isaacs from Extinction having been a mere clone. Before the outbreak, Wesker personally murdered James Marcus, Umbrella's original owner, under Isaacs' orders. When Alice gets too close to the anti-virus, Wesker decides to wake real Isaacs as well as Alicia Marcus, Umbrella's second majority owner. He also overpowers Claire Redfield and holds her at gunpoint as a bargaining chip.

Wesker's dying moments

During the final confrontation, Alicia Marcus fires Wesker as an Umbrella employee, thereby allowing the Red Queen, who had switched its allegiance to Alice due to a conflict in her programming, to attack him. The Red Queen is able to crush Wesker's right leg with a blast door, freeing Claire and mortally wounding Wesker. Alice then leaves a detonator to the explosives she has planted throughout the Hive in Wesker's hand so that when he bleeds to death, he will drop the detonator and the explosives will detonate.

Wesker begs Alicia for help, but she dismisses the need for help; Alicia points out that he's dying and to hurry up with it. Eventually, Wesker bleeds to death and drops the detonator, resulting in the explosives detonating. The explosion destroys the Hive and kills all within including Alicia and the Umbrella High Command. The deaths of Wesker, Alicia, Isaacs, his clone and the Umbrella High Command leave Umbrella leaderless and effectively destroyed.

Powers and abilities

Before injecting himself with the t-virus, Wesker was a master at martial arts. As a result of his viral injection, Wesker was granted a number of superhuman physical abilities. Wesker demonstrated hyper-accelerated speed and reflexes, enhanced agility, intensified endurance, increased strength, and limited healing factor. These attributes gave him a number of advanced combat capabilities. The virus he injected into himself also had the added ability of superhuman endurance and near-invulnerability: hardening his skeleton, internal organs, tissue, and skin.

Notable achievements of his superhuman speed, accelerated vision, and agility included being capable of dodging bullets at practically point blank range with nearly no effort (including rapidfire, multiple shot weapons, grenades, and Rocket Launchers), being able to cover great distances in short time (relatively equal to the time it would take using a fast vehicle), and performing short dashes at speeds faster than the normal human brain could process, causing him to appear to be teleporting.

Ironically, the T-virus was also his greatest weakness, and it fights him for control, which often forces Wesker to cannibalize any nearby humans to stave off the virus' control. One symptom of the virus's attempts at control was his mouth growing insect-like legs and later long tentacles, which he demonstrated during his fight with Alice, Chris, and Claire. His recovering ability, however, remained intact, as demonstrated by his recovering from both being shot by Alice, Chris and Claire, and being in several explosions. However, in Retribution, Wesker appears to no longer suffer from this problem, given no one seemed to fear being close to his room. It's possible he gained control over the T-virus when Alice stabbed him with a scapel covered with her blood; logically, Alice's blood would contain her DNA, which is the only DNA known not to suffer the virus' negative effects.

Notable achievements of his increased strength included being able to lift an adult human off the ground with one hand effortlessly. With these powers, Wesker mainly did not require weaponry other than his brute strength during combat, combined with a sufficient strategy and some meticulous observation. However, he did keep his handgun holstered at all times, and was known to never let his guard down, even outside the battlefield.

In The Final Chapter, Wesker inexplicably demonstrates no powers or enhanced abilities whatsoever. He possibly took an antidote after the events of Retribution during which he was shown to retain his superhuman speed.

Appearance and wardrobe

In Extinction, Wesker wears a black and dark purple suit. He also wears black glasses. His blonde hair is slicked back.

In Afterlife and Retribution, Wesker wears a black leather body suit and has a black belt, black glasses, black gloves, black leather boots, and a large cloak/jacket.

Romero Universe

When Resident Evil was being considered for the basis of a film, George A. Romero and Paul W. S. Anderson competed for production rights with their scripts. In Romero's script, Wesker was not the captain of S.T.A.R.S., but instead a colonel; like in every incarnation of the series, however, he is the main antagonist of the film, and a double agent. He also smokes, and has at least one tattoo.

Further notes

  • Albert Wesker initially did not appear in scripts for Resident Evil: Extinction, his lines instead being spoken by the Umbrella chairman, Commander Okamoto.[3]
  • Shawn Roberts was cast as Wesker after he originally audition for Chris Redfield in Resident Evil: Afterlife.
  • Elements of his fight with Chris and Claire aboard the Arcadia in the climax to Afterlife, including specific movements and to some extent even the dialogue were derived from the Rematch cutscene from Resident Evil 5.
  • In the Resident Evil: The Final Chapter novelization, Wesker's betrayal at the White House is expanded upon, revealing that he had been using Alice to destroy his enemy Dania Cardoza. The novelization also shows that Wesker retains his powers and is in a constant battle for control over them which leaves his cellular structure unstable. When his legs are crushed, the T-virus in Wesker's system leaves him with his blood, resulting in an inability to regenerate or break free. Alicia Marcus also suggests that Wesker's request for her help is so she can get close enough for him to consume her which will possibly give him enough new DNA to regenerate. Wesker's reaction indicates that Alicia's accusation was true.
  • Wesker worked for the Umbrella Corportaion for 17 years before his death. Thus he was hired in 1995, which would be 17 years before 2012.
