History
The Alligator, also known as Gnaw, is a boss that appears near the end of the sewer section in Resident Evil 2. Through unknown circumstances, a normal sized alligator became infected with the t-virus and grew enormously. It normally inhabits the garbage dump, where food is most easily available (its large size also limiting its movements around the sewer system) and is fond of biting down on anything, edible or not (somewhat akin to the real life tiger shark). It attacks the main player during their efforts to retrieve either Sherry Birkin or Ada Wong (depending on the chosen character) crawling out from the garbage dump to chase the player along a tunnel.

Other examples of infected alligators would be seen in Resident Evil Survivor. It can also be found in Resident Evil: Outbreak - File 2 in the Zoo. However it didn't grow to enormous size as its cousin from Resident Evil 2.

An alligator lived in the sewers underneath Raccoon City. This very large mutant grew from a baby which, like the urban legends, was flushed down the toilets, fulfilling the "sewer gator" myth. It was killed when it bit into a fuel canister, and a well-targeted shot caused it to explode inside its mouth.
The Alligator reappears as a boss in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. In this scenario it is fought by both Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. This version of the fight shows Leon and Claire at first attempting to kill it by igniting a leaking pipe valve. However this only badly burns it, forcing the duo to trick it into biting down on a gas canister that is promptly shot; the resulting explosion blowing its head apart.

Another alligator residing in the Lakeside Area of the Raccoon Zoo was one of the main attractions until the virus outbreak occurred. The survivors who crossed the small lake had to deal with the monster while swimming across.
Strategy
The Alligator can be killed by simply shooting it, causing it to eventually smash a hole in the wall and escape. Killing it in this way will cause a small amount of ammo to appear a little later on. The other more economical method involves releasing an emergency gas canister which the Alligator promptly picks up in its mouth. When the canister is shot, it explodes, taking much of the Alligator's head with it. Killing it this way means it can be killed with 1 hand gun round.

Yet two other alligators lived in the sewers of Sheena Island. Considering that the island was near Europe, these animals were probably transported as pets like the one in Raccoon's sewers.
In Outbreak File #2, the only strategy is to just swim over the area where it lives. If you really need to shoot it, stay on the dry land but close to the water. Gnaw eventually will swim to the edge and try to attack you on land. When it will try, just shoot it. It will take a few bullets from the shotgun to take it down.

History

A number of alligators were infected during the Raccoon City Destruction Incident.

An alligator lived in the sewers underneath Raccoon City. This very large mutant grew from a baby which, like the urban legends, was flushed down the toilets, fulfilling the "sewer gator" myth. This alligator became a threat to a band of survivors moving through the sewers in search of a way to the NEST. It was killed when it bit into a fuel canister, and a well-targeted shot caused it to explode inside its mouth.

Another alligator residing in the Lakeside Area of the Raccoon Zoo was one of the main attractions until the virus outbreak occurred. The survivors who crossed the small lake had to deal with the monster while swimming across.

Yet two other alligators lived in the sewers of Sheena Island. Considering that the island was near Europe, these animals were probably transported as pets like the one in Raccoon's sewers.
