Angel Studios was a video game developer founded in 1984, and was acquired by Take-Two in 2002 under the name Rockstar San Diego. Before acquisition they were known for their Midtown Madness series.
Work with Capcom[]
Angel and Capcom began working together in October 1997 when they won the contract to develop a port of Resident Evil 2 for the Nintendo 64. Angel initially intended for a worldwide Halloween 1999 release date, but problems getting in touch with the various publishers led to the Japanese and European versions entering stores in January 2000.[1] Capcom was satisfied with Angel's work, and the two collaborated once more with an original shooter IP proposed by Yoshiki Okamoto; originally named SWAT, this title evolved over the next two years to become Red Dead Revolver. Although Take-Two saw promise in the game following their acquisition of Angel, the departure of Okamoto and a series of disappointing sales led to Capcom's loss of confidence in the project, which was cancelled August 2003. Take-Two soon after bought the rights in exchange Capcom being their publishing partner in Japan.[2]
