The BIOHAZARD Cafe & Grill S.T.A.R.S. (バイオハザード カフェ＆グリル S.T.A.R.S.) was a Resident Evil-themed restaurant based in the Shibuya Parco department store in Tokyo's Shibuya ward.[1] The bar's theme is that of a Raccoon City diner popular among S.T.A.R.S. officers, and set in July 1998 in the days leading up to the events Resident Evil.
History[]
The idea of a Resident Evil-themed restaurant came from Japanese businessman Tomohiro Motomoto, who had already set-up similar restaurants themed on the One Piece and Dragon Quest series. A unit was purchased at Shibuya's Parco shopping complex following completion of a one-year licensing deal with Capcom. The restaurant was officially opened on Friday 13 July 2012.[2] To promote itself as a tourist attraction, the restaurant held room for showcasing Resident Evil memorabilia, and would also provide collectible merchandise available only at the restaurant, such as copies of the Daily Raccoon.
From August to September 2012, the restaurant promoted the film Resident Evil: Retribution, showcasing the costumes of Alice, Jill Valentine, Ada Wong and "J Pop Girl" worn by mannequins.[3] In the same month, gravure idol Akina Minami promoted the restaurant by appearing dressed in Zombie make-up and attacking a journalist.[4] From 29 March - 2 June 2013 the restaurant was refurbished to be themed on Resident Evil: Revelations, showcasing concept art, key visuals, gun models and props to promote the Unveiled Edition re-release.[5]
Service[]
In its service as a themed restaurant, the Cafe & Grill provided food, drink and entertainment. In keeping with the Resident Evil-theme, the waiters were all S.T.A.R.S. officers under their CO, S.T.A.R.S. Commander Nicolas Pettas. The team, "S.T.A.R.S. Angelique", would welcome the customers into their unit and, at certain times of the day, would require the customers' help defeating the rogue Tyrant statue which comes to life.[6] As the theme was that of a Raccoon City diner in the lead-up to the Mansion Incident, popular Billboard music up to July 1998 was selected to maintain a sense of authenticity.[7]
Among the food options for the cafe & grill, the original menu included such things as the "BBQ Grill Raccoon-Style", a steak which is carved in front of the customer, the Midnight Bisque said to be home-cooked in the Arklays, and a noodle dish sold differently for men and women, dubbed the "Barry ver." and "Jill ver.", respectively. Each day would also have a special curry or stew recipe available. With the Revelations refurbishment, new dishes and goods inspired by the game were introduced as well.[8][9]
