BIOHAZARD ZOMBIE RUSH, otherwise known as the BIOHAZARD OFFICIAL FUN RUN EVENT (バイオハザード オフィシャル ファンラン イベント Baiohazādo ofisharu fan ran ibento), is a Resident Evil-themed fun run which took place on 21 May 2017. The fun run was organized to celebrate both the 20th Anniversary and the franchise selling 75 million game copies worldwide. Some 1200 people took part in the fun run, which was broken up into smaller races throughout the day in temperatures as high as 30.9C.[1]
Background[]
The Zombie Rush was a late addition to Capcom's line-up for the franchise's 20th Anniversary celebration, which saw promotional events and merchandise from late 2015 onwards. The Zombie Rush was officially announced on 26 December 2016.[2] Initial plans were for the event to take place at an unspecified location on 18 February, but this was delayed to the Oi Racecourse on 21 May.[3][4][5] By the start of March a full line-up had been established, including a make-up stall,[6] merchandise promoting the event,[7] flyers and posters,[8] and an appearance by the musical group Kamen Joshi.[9] DJ Masa was booked as MC.[10] By April the Zombie-themed performance troupe "Zombiena" was booked,[11] along with comedian Hiroshi Shingawa.[12]
For the race itself, participants chose when purchasing tickets whether to be a "Zombie" or "Survivor". Zombies would come in make-up or receive it at a booth; Survivors meanwhile were to be provided with plastic jackets designed to be torn up. The objective of the Survivors was to make it to the end of the run with their jackets intact, while the Zombies were to race up and catch them.

Race timeline[]
Participants began arriving at 09:00, where they were given use of the facilities including the locker rooms to keep their possessions safe. Survivors and Zombies were led to different rooms to get ready, with the Zombies being greeted to a make-up booth. Those who paid for a "premium" ticket had more elaborate make-up applied by professionals.[13] Over the course of the day some 1200 participants arrived for the run, divided between 700 Zombies and 500 Survivors.[1] The first race took place at 11:00, with the schedule set for another every half hour.[14]
The race was divided into three segments, dubbed "Missions", with safe zones in-between where Zombie 'attacks' were not permitted. In theory the Survivors were to run from Zombies while solving a puzzle and reach the safe zone before losing their jacket. However, as this was primarily for fun Survivors instead largely had fun being 'eaten' by Zombies.[15]
Over events[]
From 10:00 to 12:00, cosplayers were able to submit their entries into the afternoon's cosplay competition. The cosplay rules discouraged revealing, obscene and unsafe costumes but allowed prop swords and airsoft guns in a safe manner. Cosplayers had to consent to the use of their image in news articles, and underage cosplayers required parental consent and/or supervision.[12] At the main stage DJ Masa began playing music at noon before giving way to Kame Joshi at 13:00. The event was formally opened at 13:50 with the BIOHAZARD Special Stage starting at 14:00. At 14:30, Kamen Joshi performed for their encore for another thirty minutes, at which point comedian Hiroshi Shingawa took the stage alongside Zombina. A community quiz took place at 15:20 and lasted another ten minutes.[12]
At 15:30 the Zombie Cosplay Contest began. This event saw 15 participants, who were divided into three groups of five, where the best of each group advanced to a three-way final round. Judges determined the winner based not only on the make-up but the subtleties of their walking style.[16]
