BIOHAZARD ~Mansion of Evil~ (BIOHAZARD~
Plot[]
"A long time ago, there were many mysterious disappearance cases where people disappeared one after another. Strange rumors began to spread, and this building, which no one ever approached, came to be called the "Mansion of Evil". Participants enter this mansion as a member of a ruins exploration circle... At first, they to explore it out of curiosity, but when they find a videotape inside and play it... a video of an incident that happened in this mansion in the past is projected there. What did you see there?!?" — Translation of official description[excerpt 1] |
Gameplay[]
It was open to a maximum of 10 people at a time at a fee of 600 yen.[1][2] Each group is lead by "Leader", who guides them through the dark mansion with a penlight. The mansion consists of various oddities inspired by Beginning Hour: a fan that spins and a piano that moves for no reason, a fireplace with a secret handle, and a videotape showing what happened to the last people who visited the house.[3] The ultimate objective is to escape the house, and participants are given a series of choices that effect how they will progress in their exploration. These choices must be agreed-upon by vote, so all players must either 'survive' or 'die', rather than individuals.[4] During the special press event on Wednesday 21 December, it was estimated there would be a 12.5% success rate.[5]
When entering the house the team would learn of an urban legend about demonically-possessed people living in the house who kill trespassers, at which time a voice will mutter out from afar. Finding the electricity is still being supplied, they would put in a video tape playing an edited segment of the VHS-1 tape found in the game, where Jack Baker stomps on Clancy Jarvis' head. At this point, the Bakers enter the home, forcing the group into a panic and in need of finding a key to escape, which can be found when pulling a lever hidden in the fireplace. Elsewhere during the game the players can escape the house and hide in a tool shed, or remain within trying to figure out a code for an electric lock. If failing to input the right electronic code after three attempts, the players would fail the game. Similarly, those hiding in the tool shed had to lie on the floor to hide from Marguerite, or be spotted. A telephone could ring, but picking it up would alert the Bakers to their continued presence and also lead to a game over.
Development[]
Joypolis is a chain of indoor amusement parks owned and operated by Sega. At the time of planning, Capcom and Sega were already collaborating on Resident Evil: Vendetta, and owing to positive reception of the BIOHAZARD THE ESCAPE 2 event at Universal Studios Japan in the Spring as well as the "Beginning Hour" demo release in the Summer, Capcom was interested in a Resident Evil 7-themed escape room attraction. The haunted house escape room Tokyo Ghost closed on 30 September, and was refurbished to be the site of the Mansion of Evil. Interiors walls were moved around and props replaced to make it look largely, though not exactly, like the Guest House explored in Beginning Hour. The attraction went through a revision in December 2017, where repairs were made as well as changes to video and audio. To prevent players simply coming back later the same day and spoiling the fun, the electronic code numbers would rotate along the day.
Other promotions[]
From the opening until 19 February 2017, Joypolis' D-Lounge, children were able to order the RPD (strawberry) and STARS (blueberry) soft drinks for 600 yen each. At the Frame Cafe meanwhile, customers could order an 800 yen cup of flowering tea dubbed "Plant 42", 1200 yen Tyrant-themed cheesecake, or an 1100 yen "Umbrella Muffin".
