BIO HAZARD ~Makoba Village Tragedy~ SOUND DRAMA (バイオハザード ~マコバヴィレッジの惨劇~ Baiohazādo ~ makoba virejji no sangeki ~ ?) is a radio play written by Sadayuki Murai (村井 さだゆき). It was produced by Sony Records with a catalogue of SRCL-4181.[2][3] Its story serves as a prelude to the events of the first Resident Evil game.

Plot

BHSOUNDDRANAJILL

The First Night

The story begins with opening narration by Jill Valentine during the events of Resident Evil. Writing on a typewriter, she describes the events of the past week. Several days ago the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team disappeared, and she and the rest of Alpha Team were sent out to look for them, but were chased by monsters into a mansion. A few days prior to that, however, Jill experienced another incient involving monsters, and believes the two to be connected.

The previous week, Jill writes, she had been called back from her vacation in Los Angeles by Captain Wesker to investigate a series of killings in the Arklay Mountains. Jill travels through the mountains on the highway going to Raccoon City and, forty kilometres to the north-west, her car is hit by a truck and breaks down. The truck continues on and crashes, bursting into flame. Jill investigates the truck and finds a fatally wounded man inside, who warns her that Makova is a cursed village before dying from a series of bite wounds. Stuck out in the mountains, Jill has no option but to walk to Makova to seek help. She reaches the village, finding it to be archaic in design, made of stone, and in a state of dilapidation. The villagers want nothing to do with her, and avoid Jill at all costs, save for a young boy, Toby, who's sister Lorraine drags him away.

The Second Night

At the local church, The Reverend Harvey Simmons holds a funeral service for three deceased villagers. He is interrupted by a man, Reagan, who tells the congregation of Jill's arrival. Jill walks in, asking for a phone to report an accident; they quickly see her as a police officer and become suspicious as to why she would be there. They give her directions to a public phone box and ignore her other questions. As Jill phones the police station, a strange man walks over to her, then bites through the cable. Threatened by the man, she shoots him, and then again. The man falls at the fourth shot. Jill checks the boy and finds an ID card, but the man gets back up before she can finish searching. The man, Robert, bites Jill and is then shot by The Reverend Simmons.

The Third Night

Simmons takes Jill into Toby and Lorraine's house to see to her injuries. Simmons explains to her that the man who attacked her was no longer human. When Jill asks if this is what the driver meant, Toby and Lorraine's father Wilson quickly identifies the driver as Ed, and calls him out as a drunkard. He has already recovered the body in preparation for a funeral service. Simmons and Wilson see no alternative but to keep Jill as their prisoner, as they cannot allow her to leave with knowledge of the village's situation. The children enter the room and assure their terrified mother that God will protect them, who they have learnt from their father is Saint Havos. Lorraine is slapped by their mother for saying the name. A wolf howls, getting the men's attention and they head outside with Jill.

Outside, Simmons and Wilson reaffirm their intent to keep Jill in the village. Simmons notices that the bridge heading to the highway has been destroyed by the villagers to ensure her stay. Jill asks the two for an alternative route out of the village so she can make her escape; Wilson does not take her seriously and suggests she flee into Raccoon Forest, knowing it is too dangerous. Simmons however does know a way out, but feels it is best not to tell her as he himself is trapped in the village after entering it to seek his own answers. The village chief, watching the bridge, joins the conversation and insists she stay until after the Festival of Saint Harvos. He feels it important that everyone focus on preparing for the event, to avoid a tragedy which befell the village seventy years ago. The conversation is cut short by the sound of screaming, and it becomes apparent two villagers have transformed into Zombies, one of whom Reagan.

The Fourth Night

Gunshots ring out as the villagers defend themselves from the Zombies, but Jill is bitten a second time in the confusion. Everyone flees to the church. Wilson locks the door, preventing any stranded villagers getting inside. Only Jill; Simmons; Wilson; Curtis and the village chief made it to the church; they are armed only with Curtis' empty shotgun and Jill's Beretta 92 with only a few bullets. The five split up to search for other weapons should the Zombies break in.

Exploring the church, Jill finds herself in a room resembling a mediaeval torture chamber, and finds a newspaper article from August 1924, detailing the horrific events of the village seventy years prior during a cult's celebration of the Festival of Saint Harvos, the newspaper only discovering it after the cut's infiltration by Raccoon University's Professor Simmons.

Elsewhere, Toby; Lorraine and their mother hide in their house waiting for their father to return. The mother hides the two in a wardrobe to keep them away from the Zombies, who then burst in through the window and attack her.

The Fifth Night

At the church, Simmons enters the chamber and quickly realises Jill read the newspaper article. As the Zombies start entering the church, he takes her into another room to hide. There, he explains the situation, that for a time the Zombies can occasionally revert to their former selves; until the shootout outside the villagers were unwilling to kill them all. Simmons explains the context of the article. A cult of devil worshippers live in the village, and he came there in 1993 to see if what his great-grandfather documented was true and hoped to save their souls, but was made their prisoner as Jill is because they feared outsiders would persecute them if word of the village got out. He explains further that their gods name is derived from a reversing of Jehovah.

Back at the house, the mother endures attacks from the Zombies. About to die, she tells Lorraine and Toby to escape from the village in a hidden boat should she die. She herself never followed the village's religion, and kept a boat should she be forced to escape.
