Twenty years set before the events of Gadiwell outbreak, Bale was a soldier in the military when an accidental biohazard release happened on the island. He used the military's resources to investigate the matter and found out that the leak came from an Umbrella Corporation facility where the Tyrant Virus was being researched and developed but the incident was covered up. Two decades then passed in relative peace, but then just four days before his niece Rain Rubens was scheduled to return from school, Bale had gone out hunting some rabbits in the woods and instead encountered a Zombie. Bale tried to fire his hunting rifle at it but a gunshot from an unknown source killed the zombie's first. He then saw several men in a white van arrive, who disposed of the zombie’s remains and then tried to attack him for witnessing it. Bale managed to get away but was later attacked in his own home, forcing him to wander from place to place on the island to throw his pursuers off.
When Norse Chirac, Kate and Rain later venture to his hunting ground to find him they are attacked by groups of zombified islanders, forcing them to run deeper into the woods. Kate is separated from the two during the pursuit prompting Norse to direct Rain to continue running while he searches for her. Rain however trips shortly afterwards and is knocked unconscious only to awaken and be confronted by two zombie dogs. Luckily Bale appeared and managed to shoot and kill the diseased creatures. Rain tearfully thanked him but at that moment a car approached them prompting him to tell her to hide. He and Rain managed to hide from the car but after it leaves Bale suddenly disappeared before Rain could ask what’s going on. Eventually Norse and Rain met up again, and she proceeded to tell him about her encounter with her uncle.
Meanwhile Bale, after being informed of Kate’s vanishing by Rain’s childhood friend Paul, sets out to find her. He subsequently manages to find Kate’s blue sneaker in front of a supposedly abandon Umbrella lab in the forest and correctly deduces that she must have been been taken inside
The next morning Norse and Rain head to the ruined lighthouse as directed by Paul and sees him get shot by a sniper employed by Umbrella. After Norse goes to check the cliff that Paul had fallen from and realizes he’s dead, he heads back to Rain and shortly afterwards the two find Bale bleeding to death nearby from a bullet wound to the stomach. Norse upon finding the gruesome sight, tries to save Bale by ripping his shirt and using it to staunch the blood flow from the wound with Bale responding with a weak smile of gratitude. After Bale tells the pair of the information that he uncovered, he gives Norse his Colt 1911 pistol and entrusts Norse with protecting his niece and getting her off the island. Shortly after, he dies from excessive blood loss leaving Rain grief stricken.
