According to co-Producer Shinji Mikami, the general idea of a Resident Evil stage adaptation was floated around since 1999, and picked up by Super Eccentric Theatre.[1] This was the first SET play to appear in eight cities.[2] The play's title is a portmonteau of "Biohazard" and "Android", devised to give it an identifiable but more technological-sounding title; the subtitle "Year Zero" was picked as it was to be performed in 2000.[2]
Stage production
The play's script was written by Naoyuki Ōsawa as a musical horror comedy to give a human face to the zombies, but due to a longer-than-anticipated drafting process, the full cast was not yet organised by the Spring TGS event.[2] Yagahashi added at TGS he wanted the younger dancers and singers of the troupe to have roles in the play, hoping to give them more exposure.[2] The story revolves around the aftereffects of a viral outbreak in "BioCity" nine years prior.[3] Costumes were provided by Kojiro Kikuta of "Tokyo Costume", while music was performed by Nakamura Masato.[4]
