Bitores Mendez was the village chief of El Pueblo, whom Leon S. Kennedy faced shortly into the scenario of Resident Evil 4. He is one of the controllers of Las Plagas parasite, and a member of Los Illuminados. Some of Mendez's distinguishing characteristics includes his imposing stature, fake left eye and resistance to firearms. He leads the hunt for Leon and the presidents daughter, Ashley Graham earlier in the game, leaving behind notes of his strategies to trap the two.

Biography

When Leon first encountered chief Mendez, he was unable to subdue the giant and was knocked unconscious. Later, Mendez began to strangle Leon, but reconsidered once he realized that Leon was made the host of a Las Plagas parasite. Leon pursued the chief after that point, however, Mendez attempted to kill him again, although he was distracted by Ada Wong and left Leon to chase her.

In his final confrontation with Leon, Mendez trapped Leon in a building by twisting the metal door handles together with his bare hands. He turned back to Leon and was about to grab him. Leon rolled out of the way and kicked over a gas barrel, causing it to leak gasoline at Mendez's feet. After Leon shot the puddle of gasoline, the gas tank exploded. However, the explosion caused Mendez to mutate into a grotesque, inhuman form. His fingernails became elongated, sharp talons; a pair of segmented limbs burst from his back, and his torso was split by a thick, spinal column-like structure edged by tiny, moving legs, greatly increasing his already impressive height. Even severing him below the waist failed to kill him in this form, and in fact increased his mobility; he now used the limbs on his back to grab onto wooden beams.

It is unclear if this level of assimilation would eventually be demonstrated by all those infected by Las Plagas, or if Mendez was subject of experimentation like many of the game's monsters.

Using firearms, Leon eventually killed Mendez and escaped from the barn, he took Mendez's fake eye to open the gate that led out of the village and reunited with Ashley. After using the eye to unlock the door, Leon and Ashley headed onward to find their way back to civilization.

Trivia

  • Interestingly enough, his red eye is his false eye, meaning his blue eye is the real one. Every other infected has red eyes. So this contradicts all signs of plagas infection. However, there is the possibility that the dominant-strain Plaga infection has different effects on its host.
  • His Plagas form resembles the Los Illuminados' insignia.
  • Also, his appearance is similar to T-103 for both being tall and wearing long trench coats.
  • Mendez like Nemisis and T-103, all mutate into a more powerful form resulting in the loss of their trenchcoats.
  • The name "Bitores" was just made up for the character. All the other Spaniards in the game have real names.
  • Although he is infected by a dominant-strain Plaga his infected form is similar to a Centipede Plaga infection, due to his extended body.
  • Mendez is one of the few enemies in the game who can take more than one hit from the Rocket Launcher and still survive.
  • When you retrieve his fake eye, it can still be seen in his eye socket.
  • His eyes appear similar to Lady, Arkham, and the Jester's eyes in Devil May Cry 3, one being red, and the other blue.
  • Excluding Leon's encounter with Luis, Bitores tends to fight Leon without any help.
  • Shooting him 3-5 times on his back with a Shotgun will kill him.
  • In the first part of the walkthrough included in Nintendo Power, Bitores Mendez was erroneously referred to as "Sadler." They corrected their mistake and apologized in the next issue.
  • He slightly resembles a monster from Adventure Quest Worlds named Belrot the Fiend. Both are bald, have elongated claws, have centipede-esque spines, and have a pair of clawed tentacle-like arms on their backs.
  • Bitore's expansive spine is critically effected from any weapon.
