The Special Air Service (SAS) is a British Army special forces corps originally founded during World War 2 which undertakes a number of roles including covert reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, direct action, and hostage rescue. There are three SAS regiments - 21 Special Air Service, 22 Special Air Service and 23 Special Air Service.
During the Troubles, the SAS took part in a number of counter-terror operations in Northern Ireland. Two years before the Gadiwell outbreak, the Counter-Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) wing was tasked with saving UN hostages from an Irish Republican Army brigade, but suffered a number of fatalities when the raid ended in a suicide-bombing. The resulting Army board of inquiry later determined that the mission's failure was due to surviving unit member Norse Chirac's hesitation to shoot the bomber due to her young age, and he was subsequently discharged from the service.[1]
