Changing characters,[1] also called Switching characters[2] is a gameplay feature first introduced in Resident Evil 0 that allows the player to freely change characters in real time. It was later used again in Resident Evil: Revelations 2.

Resident Evil 0[]

In Resident Evil 0, the character switch system allows the player to change between Rebecca or Billy (or Wesker in Wesker Mode) at any time, even if the second character is in a different room. Changing characters can also be done within the inventory screen. The character currently under control is dubbed "main character" and the other not in control is the "partner character".[1]

In some intances, changing characters is required in order to progress through the game. The player is also able to control both characters at the same time (provided they are in the same room) by moving both analog sticks, the one on the left controls the main character and the one of the right controls the partner character.

When changing characters, a sound effect of a heart beat will be heard before switching characters, the screen does a small blur effect before switching as well.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2[]

The character switch is only available in the Campaign mode of Resident Evil: Revelations 2, it lets the player switch from the two playable characters on the go in one button press no matter how far away one character is from the other. However, there are two instances where the player can't switch:

  • If the supporting character (Moira or Natalia) is in a downed state.
  • If one of the characters is being grabbed by an enemy. (can switch away but not into the grabbed character)

Just like in Resident Evil 0, switching character is required in some areas in order to progress. When changing characters, the game will have a slight slow down before the screen goes black and switches to the other character, in co-op mode, the feature is not available.
