"Stranger. Stranger, now that's a weapon."
— Merchant's comment when buying the Chicago Typewriter

The Chicago Typewriter is an unlockable weapon in Resident Evil 4.

Gameplay

The Chicago Typewriter must be unlocked before it can be used anywhere in the game. In the GameCube version, it is available for 1,000,000 after beating the Assignment Ada minigame. In all other versions, beating Separate Ways will unlock this gun for the main game for the same price, while beating Assignment Ada will unlock it for Separate Ways, where it costs 300,000₧.

Leon will fire from the shoulder while Ada will fire from the hip. It takes up 21 spaces (7x3) of inventory. It has set stats and cannot be upgraded. It has firepower of 10.0 and a firing speed of 0.10 seconds, effectively doing 100.0 damage per second. It has infinite ammo and does not requires reloading however, a reload can still be done.

A typical Ganado will die from one or two shots from the Typewriter and entire crowds will fall in seconds. Even tough enemies such as Chainsaw Man and Gatling Man can be easily defeated. Bosses such as the first El Gigante Leon fights will be easier to kill, making the later stages of the game much easier as well.

Appearance

The appearance of the Chicago Typewriter changes depending on Leon's costume or if Ada is using it.

While Leon is in his Default or Special 1 costumes, the Chicago Typewriter will have its original appearance (the only one usable in the Gamecube version). While Leon is in his Special 2 (the mobster) outfit or if the player is using it as Ada in Separate Ways, its appearance will be modified. The difference will be it will have an ammo drum instead of a magazine, and it will have a foregrip.

Special reloading

When Leon is in costume Special 2, there are two special reloading animations. In the first animation, Leon simply straightens his hat. The second is a complicated throw and catch of the hat. This one occurs after reloading four times in a row.

Examine

  • Regular Description
"A powerful .45 caliber machinegun that fires infinite bullets! Fire away Chicago-style"
  • Alternate Description (Leon special costume 2 & Ada)
"This machine gun is outfitted with a powerful .45 caliber magazine."

Stats

The stats show the weapons is already fully upgraded. Firepower and Capacity are both at Lv 6 and have exclusive upgrades while Firing Speed and Reload Speed are both shown to at Lv 1.

Firepower Firing Speed Reload Speed Capacity
10.0 0.10 2.83 ---

Further Notes

  • When examined, the stats depict the weapon as having fully upgraded stats evident by the yellow bars. This may suggest it was originally planned to be a normal weapon in the main game as its description also states it is a .45 caliber weapon, suggesting what type of ammo it could have used. The fact it has a reload animation (excluding the Mafia costume), despite never needing to change magazines, also adds to the speculation that it was intended as a standard weapon.
  • When wearing the mafia outfit, the inventory screen will often show Leon with the Chicago Typewriter resting on his shoulder. But in a few instances; Leon is seen holding the submachine gun in one hand, while the other hand is holding the tip of his hat.
