The Chicago Typewriter is a special unlockable weapon in Resident Evil 4. It is an infinite-ammo sub-machine gun based on the Thompson M1A1.

Gameplay

The Chicago Typewriter must be unlocked before it can be used anywhere in the game. In the GameCube version, it is available for 1,000,000 after beating the Assignment Ada minigame. In all other versions, beating Separate Ways will unlock this gun for the main game, while beating Assignment: Ada will unlock it for Separate Ways, where it costs 300,000₧.

Leon will fire from the shoulder while Ada will fire from the hip.

It takes up 21 spaces (7x3) of inventory, making it one of the bulkiest weapons in the game. It is equivalent in size to the P.R.L. 412.

It has a firepower of 10.0 and can fire every 0.10 seconds, effectively doing 100.0 damage per second. It has an infinite ammo supply and does not require reloading.  Regardless, it still can be "reloaded" for fun, taking 2.83 seconds. The Chicago Typewriter cannot be upgraded (it appears to be bought already fully upgraded).

A typical Ganado will die from one or two shots from the Typewriter, entire crowds fall in seconds, and even the hard part in the first chapter can be passed easily. Bosses such as the first El Gigante Leon encounters take a similar amount of time to kill, and the later stages of the game will be much easier as well.

Appearance

The appearance of the Chicago Typewriter changes depending on if Leon or Leon in his Mafia costume and Ada is using it.

Normally the Chicago Typewriter's skin closely resembles an M1A1 Thompson, famous for its use in World War II, using a 30-round box type magazine. When used by Ada or Leon in the Mafia costume the Typewriter resembles the M1921 model with a foregrip and 50-round drum magazine.

Special Reloading

The Chicago Typewriter has a normal reloading animation when used by Leon in his normal or RPD costumes or by Ada. However when Leon is in costume Special 2 (Mobster outfit), there are two special reloading animations.

The first animation Leon reloads and quickly straightens his hat. The second is a complicated throw and catch of the hat. This one occurs after reloading four times in a row.

Further Notes

  • When examined, the stats depict the weapon as having fully upgraded stats evident by the yellow bars. This may suggest it was originally planned to be a normal weapon in the main game as its description also states it is a .45 caliber weapon suggesting what type of ammo it could have used.
