Damnation - Soviet dissolution

An infographic of the dissolusion.

The Collapse of the Soviet Union was a major political event which began in the late 1980s and ended with the dissolution of the Union on December 26, 1991. After years of financial strain and growing nationalism among the various constituent peoples, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics broke off into more than a dozen republics alongside allied Communist republics which gave away to the democratic states more accepting of American-style capitalism.[1]

Legacy[]

The Soviet Union's collapse had a lasting legacy in world politics. Among the earliest occurrences were the ethnic conflicts within the new states involving ethnic minorities without a republic of their own. Mikhail Victor, an ethnic Russian from Leningrad joined a guerrilla organization aimed at the creation of a new state inhabited by his wife's ethnic group.

The Eastern Slav Republic quickly descended into a civil war as it developed from a Socialist society into an Oligarchy with the conservatives in the country's poorer areas trying to split off into their own nation. A joint Russian-US operation in 2011 eventually put the civil war to an end when it was discovered that President Svetlana Belikova was providing arms to the rebels to justify war crimes.

Soon after the Soviet Union's collapse, the Umbrella Corporation began founding subsidiaries in the area including a secret laboratory in Russia's North Caucasus, hidden beneath an oil refinery. Umbrella also hired a number of former Soviet soldiers who failed to continue service with the Russian Federation including Sergei Vladimir and Nikolai Zinoviev. Guerillas such as Mikhail were also hired for their Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service with appropriate bribes to the Russian authorities.

Outside the former Soviet Union itself, the Eastern Bloc state of Edonia abandoned parliamentary democracy in favor of a military dictatorship, subsequently falling into a civil war with rebel groups heavily supported by foreign mercenaries such as Jake Muller. In 2012, the rebels were infected unknowingly with the C-Virus and the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance was sent into the country to eliminate the rebels.
