Del Lago (Spanish, literally meaning Of or From the Lake) was a massive Plaga-infected amphibian that lived in a lake near a Spanish village.

Biology

More than twenty meters in length, Del Lago, had an immense jaw with several rows of teeth, and from what seemed to be its throat, countless writhing Plaga tentacles emerged when it swam in an attack pattern. Capable of devouring human beings, it was a true leviathan residing in the lake nearby the village's church. It possessed no discernible eyes, but it's speed was deceptively fast in water.

History

One of the earlier Plaga experiments by Los Illuminados, Del Lago was a salamander that became host to a parasite.[2] The organism reacted to its small host by mutating it, increasing its size considerably. It was fed by the disposal of corpses, as seen by Leon S. Kennedy as a pair ganado dumped a police officer's corpse in the lake.

Leon first learned of the creature near the church, where a letter notified the ganado that it had been awoken by Lord Saddler to guard the lake.

Leon then fought it in a small motorboat anchored in the lake's shores. While Leon was crossing the lake, the Del Lago got hooked on to the boat's anchor. Leon was then pulled on along behind the Del Lago at amazing speeds. After bombarding the beast with nearly a dozen harpoons, the Del Lago began spewing blood in copious quantities, and it succumbed to its injuries, sinking to the bottom of the Lake, nearly bringing Leon with it.

Trivia

  • If Leon stands on the edge of the dock and fires into the water, killing fish for example, Del Lago will appear from what seems to be the most shallow part of the whole lake and eat him, causing instant death. It is however possible to avoid death by standing back away from the shore when Del Lago emerges.
  • The Del Lago takes ten spears to defeat on Normal, and twelve on Professional.
  • Del Lago eats one of the two cops sent with Leon to the village.
  • How much health the player has when knocked off determines the distance they are from the boat. For example, in the yellow "Warning" stage, Leon will get knocked further than if his health was green and if there is no health left, the player will be tossed a great distance away from the boat and will inevitably be eaten before they get back.
  • When fighting Del Lago, the background music sounds very similar to the musical score from the movie Jaws.
  • This is the only boss of any kind where you receive no reward aside from not being eaten.
  • If you throw a grenade or a rocket launcher to your feet, you are thrown away and Del Lago eats only the dock, and even when you're alive (you notice it because you hear Leon getting up) the game will tell you that you died.
  • Del Lago's theme song also plays during Separate Ways; when you go into the church, and when fighting one of the Bella Sisters. This can create dramatic moments for the player.
  • Similar to the Ndesu of Resident Evil 5, Del Lago is the only boss in Resident Evil 4 that cannot be killed within two hits, while every other boss in the game can be killed with one of the rocket launchers very quickly.
  • Del Lago never fully surfaces from the lake.
  • Del Lago resembles The Leviathan of ancient lore.
  • Del Lago's legs are vestigial in nature so he's unable to walk on land.
  • It bears a slight resemblence to the Chykka Larva from the game Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, as they are both water based creatures who lived and are battled in a water type environment.
