Background[]

Consumer Games Development Division 1‏‎ (CS第一 (だいいち)開発 (かいはつ) CS dai ichi kaihatsu tōkatsu?), or simply "Division 1", is a Capcom games development studio, and is the main studio responsible for Resident Evil games development in modern times. It took over from Capcom Production Studio 4 when Capcom began re-developing its studio structure. Jun Takeuchi is currently the head of Division 1.[1]

History[]

Division 1 began pre-production of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in January 2014 with Masachika Kawata as Producer and Kōshi Nakanishi as Director. Development was largely complete by August 2016, when Resident Evil Village entered pre-production. Development was completed in October, with a smaller team left behind to work on patches and DLC.

In late 2015 a separate department under Yoshiaki Hirabayashi began work on Resident Evil 2, a remake to the 1998 PlayStation game. In 2016 Capcom launched a managing initiative to require parallel-development of franchise titles, with the goal of releasing new AAA titles every 2.5 years.[2] In mid-2016 Takeuchi held a meeting future Resident Evil titles; it was agreed that Division 1 prioritise work on Resident Evil Village, slated for a 2021 release, and that Resident Evil 2's team would move on to Resident Evil 4 once complete. A remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was also greenlit as a AA title which could be released between Resident Evil 2 and Village. It was either at this point or soon after that an executive decision within the company pushed for an annual release requirement for the franchise.[3]

Structure[]

As of 2019 Division 1 consists of four development teams, dubbed "Departments", which all answer to Takeuchi as studio head, with Department 4 being the latest addition.[4] This allows for Division 1 to work on four AAA titles in parallel in varying stages of development while allowing room for more games to enter pre-production.
