"Those poor soldiers. They were good men just doing their jobs, and that scum murdered them and escaped!" — Edward upon finding Billy Coen's prison transfer papers.
Edward Dewey (エドワード・デューイ,Edowādo Dyūi?) was a member of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service Bravo, serving the position of Rear Security. He was a tall man, licensed as a helicopter pilot, and a skilled marksmen. His hobby was dancing.
Dewey was S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team's primary pilot. He tended to look after the team's younger members, such as Rebecca Chambers, and was also the team's auxiliary mechanic in conjunction with designated vehicle specialist, Forest Speyer.
Arklay Incident Investigation
"You... You must be careful, Rebecca. The... The forest is full of zombies and monsters..." — Edward warns Rebecca before his death.
On 23 July 1998, Dewey was dispatched with S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team to investigate a series of bizarre murders in the Arklay Mountains. Although he normally served as the team's main pilot, he acted as co-pilot next to Kevin Dooley during this mission, presumably so that he could assist in search-and-rescue operations should the need arise, until it experienced engine failure and was forced to crash land. While investigating the surrounding area, the team discovered the wreckage of a military police van originally transporting convict Billy Coen.
The team then split up to search for him, and Dewey made his way into the surrounding Raccoon Forest where he encountered infected creatures and was attacked, en masse, by a Cerberus pack. Armed only with his favorite rifle, and his Samurai Edge, his choice of weapons made it virtually impossible to fend off the charging pack.[notes 1] Edward escaped, although mortally injured, to a nearby train, the "Ecliptic Express", where he warned Rebecca that there were monsters in the forest, before passing out. Infected by the t-Virus, his body mutated to an extent his injuries were no longer life-threatening, and awoke as a Zombie. Rebecca encountered him elsewhere on the train, eating the body of another victim, and was forced to kill him.
