Escape from the Abandoned Hospital (ある廃病院からの脱出 aru hai byōin kara no dasshutsu) was an escape room event run by Scrap and Real Escape Game in collaboration with Capcom. It was originally held in 2012, but was brought back in 2016-2017 to promote Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.[1][2] The story revolves around a team who is part of a BSAA investigation into suspicious activity at a hospital.
Plot[]
"A hospital that was suddenly closed a few years ago.
There were rumors that the abandoned hospital was producing biological weapons. You are an investigator dispatched to the hospital at the request of the United Nations. During the investigation, the door suddenly closed and I was trapped. The virus will definitely erode your body. If you don't find the vaccine within an hour, it's too late. Gameplay[]
Several "performances" took place for each day the event was held, with them taking place over roughly 100 minutes, consisting of 60 minutes of game time as well as time to prep new teams and check for damages. Players were split up into groups of six, a figure deemed large enough to solve the puzzles but still be a challenge.[3] At least for the Revival event the hospital could hold enough capacity for 80 people at a time, allowing for as many as 14 teams at full capacity. As was customary for Scrap events, participants were only allowed to play the game once to avoid cheating, and had to sign an agreement not to leak the solution to the puzzles. Although children were permitted to attend, they were not allowed to attend the late night performances, with the 22:30 showings in the 2012 event being adults-only.[4]

Capcom heavily promoted Resident Evil over the course of 2012 due to its busy schedule, with three video games and two movies set to launch. Two scream park attractions were planned for this year, with Real Escape Room and Scrap handling "Escape from the Abandoned Hospital" in the Summer, with Universal Studios Japan being the site of "Umbrella Corporation ~ t-Virus Escape ~" in the Autumn.
Scrap used Tamai Hospital in Hatsudai, Shibuya as the location for this event; the hospital had been closed for some time and was being used as a venue for various expos and music events. By having a former hospital be the setting of a fictional hospital, Scrap was able to add to the realism in its designs for the building.[5] Tickets went on sale on the morning of 2 June for a total of 108 performances between 19 July and 31 August. Due to high demand, these tickets were sold out in less than two days.[4][6] On 19 June Scrap announced that an additional 104 performances were being made available through to 20 September, with tickets going on sale on 7 July.[7] On 17 July, the staff went through a rehearsal of the event to fix any problems such as missing items or incorrect clues.[8]
Revival event[]
Following positive reception to Scrap's BIOHAZARD THE ESCAPE 2 event at Universal Studios Japan, the two companies explored possibilities of a 2017 event; this year was both the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard as well as Scrap's 10th anniversary. As they had since acquired the former Korakuen Himitsukichi hospital in Koishikawa, Bunkyou, the two were happy re-using the 2012 game's scenario.[2][3] The scenario and puzzles were kept the same, making both events equally as difficult. There was however care to modify the Revival to be more in keeping with Resident Evil, with the inclusion of Green Herbs and typewriters around the hospital.[9] The event was announced on 4 November 2016, with an initial performance period of 9 December-5 March; due to high ticket sales this was extended further to 14 May.[10]
Over the course of November the hospital was refurbished to be Resident Evil themed.[11][12] The staff did a trial run on 8 December to fix any last-minute issues.[13]
Reception[]
The success rate for the 2012 game was low, as was customary for Scrap. After two weeks, the success rate was estimated to be around 5%, which it only climbing up to 10% when the event concluded.[14][15] The event was featured on the TBS series, "King's Brunch".[16]
For the Revival event a total of 2835 people took part, of which only 772 'survived'.[15]
