This is a list of easter eggs that can be found in Resident Evil and its 2002 remake. Images will be supplied to each section when available.

Blood on the walls[]

In the original game a blood stain can be found on the wooden part of the back wall in the Main Hall. It can be found when turning right to the second level; it's right at the top of the stairs. At one point early in the development, there were to be blood stained messages on the walls. This was the only remnant. One of the messages was supposed to say "For God's sake, get out!", a reference to the Famicom game "Sweet Home".[citation needed]

The Trial version of Resident Evil has a bloody message near the west-wing staircase. It reads "painful breathing... someone stop this suffering..." (くるしい、息が…誰かこのくるしみをとめて… Kurushī, iki ga… Dare ka kono kurushimi o tomete…?). Based on the grammar and background, it was left incomplete when the writer fell to the floor.

Greek messages[]

The Resident Evil remake features a lot of Greek characters, though many do not resemble actual words. One of the tombstones in the Cemetery behind the hall, however, reads out a person's name as "χαπχομ υγχβηνλ". When transliterated and localized into an appropriate Latin alphabet spelling, the first word reads out as "Kapkom" (derived from "Chapchom"). "Kapkom" is of course a reference to Capcom. "χαπχομ" is again used in the underground section of that room, and is written beneath the statue without a nose.

Zombie Wesker[]

SAT Zombie Wesker

The Sega Saturn version of the game featured an exclusive mode called Battle Game. One of the enemies the player can come across is a zombified Albert Wesker, who takes more shots to kill than normal zombies.

Megaman[]

Megaman in Chris skin

There is a hidden Megaman drawing in the file EM102D.EMD in BIO HAZARD Trial Version. It shares its file with a palette for Chris Redfield's skin.

Red Hunter[]

When activating power to the elevator in the mansion basement, walk upstairs through the kitchens rather than use the elevator. Running down the hallway to Kenneth's body and the dining room, a red-coloured Hunter α will burst through from another corridor. If this enemy is encountered, the loading zone will consist of both corridors for the rest of the game.

Message from the director[]

If the player succeeds in beating Invisible Mode within five hours, they will unlock the following message from Resident Evil director, Shinji Mikami:

Thank you for taking the time to play all the way through 'biohazard' (Resident Evil). If you're reading this letter, I salute you! You are truly a remarkable player! I imagine you must have had some pretty memorable experiences along the way!

The pain of seeing the "Game Over" screen time after time... The sweet taste of victory after you finally beat the game... The feelings of camaraderie you shared with your character... The excitement... and the overwhelming sense of dread.

We believe that games are more than just the product of a team of developers. It takes the support of dedicated players like you to make a game worthwhile.

For this reason we are truly delighted when someone enjoys one of our games as thoroughly as you have.

Therefore, on behalf of the entire staff, please allow me to express our gratitude and congratulate you on a job well done!

Thank you very much for playing!

Shinji Mikami
Dev Team Representative

GameCube appearance[]

The MO disk readers were altered in the remake to appear as black boxes, whereas in the original game they were white and seemed more like fax machines. Its appearance was striking enough that the biohazard Kaitai Shinsho notes a similarity to the GameCube console the game was for, suggesting its design was changed as a joke.[1][excerpt 1]

Tofu[]

There is an easter egg with the computer lab in which you must enter the passwords. When trying to unlock the B2F door, if you enter "Mole", the correct password that was used in the original Resident Evil game, you will hear Tofu speaking. This will not unlock the B2F door though.

    "研究所にゲームキューブ(?)が置かれている
    研究所で仲間を助けるには、 MOディスクを使ってパスコードを送信する必要がある。 このときに利用するパスコードの送信機は、 オリジナル版だと白くて四角い、 あまり特徴のない形をしていた。 一方、 ゲームキューブ版では、 下の写真のような見覚えのあるデザインに変更されたのだ。"
