Matthew Christopher Mercer (born 29 June 1982 in Florida) is an American voice actor known for his recurring role as English voice of Leon S. Kennedy between 2011 and 2023.

Career[]

Resident Evil[]

Mercer took over the role of Leon S. Kennedy from actor Paul Mercier, who recorded for the part over several projects from 2003-2009. Mercer voiced the character in the 2011 animated film Resident Evil: Damnation and in the 2012 video game Resident Evil 6. The studio producing 2012 film Resident Evil: Retribution put out an audition call to provide ADR for Johann Urb's live-action performance as the character, using audio of Mercer's performance as a reference, instead of contacting him. He then auditioned for the role but was passed over.[1] Aside from dialogue being re-used in Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Mercer voiced Leon in the 2017 animated film Resident Evil: Vendetta. With the casting of Nick Apostolides in Resident Evil 2, capcom wanted a newer, fresh sounding Leon for the remakes, leading Mercer to not voice the character for 6 years when he returned to voice him in the 2023 film Resident Evil: Death Island.

Other works[]

Other video game credits includes Jack Cooper in Titanfall 2, Chrom in Fire Emblem Awakening, Cassidy (formerly known as McCree) in Overwatch 1 and 2, MacCready in Fallout 4, and Yusuke Kitagawa in Persona 5.

Mercer also voices heavily in anime, including the character Levi in Attack on Titan, Sinbad in Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Kiritsugu Emiya in Fate/Zero, and Trafalgar Law in the Funimation dub of One Piece.

In addition, Mercer had a hand in many aspects of the web-series There Will Be Brawl (based on the video game series Super Smash Bros.), in which he not only voiced characters but was also responsible for directing, producing, visual editing, and costume design. He also is a main member of the web show Critical Role, where he and several other voice actors (including Laura Bailey, Samuel Riegel, and Liam C. O'Brien) play Dungeons & Dragons with him as the dungeon master.
