Forest Speyer was a member of the Special Tactics And Rescue Service, an organisation within the Raccoon Police Department, serving under the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team as the cyber security supervisor[excerpt 1] of the team and as its marksman; a similar role of his best friend, S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team's Chris Redfield. The two were friendly rivals and commonly turned target practice into competitions, with Chris generally the victor. Like Redfield and Jill Valentine, Speyer came from a military background.[3][excerpt 2] He had a golden sword tattoo with crimson wings on his left upper bicep and his driving skills were above average even at a hobby level.[4]
Since his time serving the United States Army, Speyer was known as an excellent marksman and a perfectionist in his work, being highly regarded by his colleagues for being a young man full of life and able to do whatever was necessary to fulfill his mission. He was also a close friend of Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine before either of them joined Special Tactics And Rescue Service.
Because of his particularly strong bond with Chris, both always vied for the Raccoon Police Department's best sniper awards when they were off duty.[5] He was also close to Joseph Frost, and together with Redfield, the three used to go drunkenly tearing around the suburbs of Raccoon City, causing minor disturbances before returning home.
Arklay Incident Investigation
On 23 July 1998, Bravo team was sent into the Arklay Mountains to investigate the disappearances and brutal murders of hikers.[6] Their helicopter experienced engine failure and crashed into the forest.[6] The R.P.D. pilot, Kevin Dooley stayed behind to find the cause of the failure.[6]
While Rebecca Chambers and Edward Dewey searched the Raccoon forest,[6][7] the rest of Bravo Team - Speyer included - found an abandoned Spencer Mansion. The team split up to check the area and report back with their findings. Unbeknownst to them, Kevin[8] and Edward were already dead,[7] and Rebecca was unable to reach them for another day.[9]
Whilst checking the second floor East terrace, Speyer was attacked and pecked to death by crows.[excerpt 3] He was rendered infected and unconscious following the attack, and awoke as a Zombie when found by his S.T.A.R.S. comrades, who put him to rest.[note 1]
