Well, after learning of a fine contributors ban from cat sparked a discussion on ban ethics, I decided to make the third installment of my forum posts that will most likely never be heard from again trilogy. This time it's on ban ethics and creating a Chat moderators rulebook.
What I mean by a "Rulebook"
A Page that is a constant reminder to Chat Moderators of the rules and standards of chat and remind us the proper procedure to deal with an acting out individual, similar to a police handbook. But in order to make a handbook on chat moderator standards and ethics, we actually need to have standards and ethics... so let's begin shall we?
Ban Worthy Crimes
These are the following crimes that i believe should constitute a ban from chat by chat moderators. If I missed a few, please add it up here:
- Spam
- Posting Shock Sites
- Excessive Roleplaying
- Excessive Communication in a language other than English.
- Trolling
- Disobeying Chat Moderators or Admins
- Threatening of Users
- Insulting of Users
- Racism
- Being under the age of 13
- Sockpuppeting
Before the Ban
If a person does something that violates the chat rules, Depending on the severity of the crime, you can do one of three things.
- Warn them (W) Goes like this: Warn->Kick+Warn Again After Rejoining->Ban
- Kick+Warn (K+W) Goes like this: Kick+Warn After Rejoining->Ban
- Ban Them (B)Goes like this: ->Ban
The symbols above shall correspond with what is below.
How long should they be banned?
What I think would be a good system to determine ban time is a points system. Every offense will be worth a certain amount of time banned. For example lets say:
- talking in another language excessively is a 1 week ban (W)
- Excessive Roleplaying is a 1 week ban (W)
- Trolling is a 2 week ban (K+W)
- spamming will cost you a 2 week ban (K+W)
- Insulting of users (W)
- Disobeying chat moderators is a 2 week ban (K+W)
- posting shock sites is a 3 week ban (K+W)/(B) Depending on severity.
- threatening of users is a 3 week ban (K+W)
- racism is a 3 week ban (K+W)
- Being Underage is a ban for however long until he/she turns 13 (B) If undisclosed, 1 year.
- Sockpuppeting is a permaban (B)
- Note:These are all examples and are subject to change through discussion.
So if a user spams maliciously he is banned for two weeks. But let's say this user spams and gets asked to stop by a chat moderator, but he refuses and calls said moderator a racist term. He would be banned for spamming, threatening another user, racism, and disobeying chat mods, which adds up to about a 10 week ban, or 2 1/2 month ban. If it is his second ban, double the sentence. If it's his third, it's a permaban.
- Note: These rules go for everyone. No one is above these rules, not even chat moderators. Your ban will not be lessened just because you are a very active user that edits alot. I am just as subject to these rules as you are.
After the ban
After banning said user, add his name to the chat ban list (Which hasnt been used for centuries) and drop the {{Chatban}} template into his message wall, while filling out all the nessecary information.
Conclusion
I hope that chat mods will read this and help determine our standards, so that way people won't get banned unfairly because I'm a little stricter than another moderator. It's more fair to everyone. Thank you for your time.

Support I love it I love EVERYTHING about it. As a chat mod and rollbacker on here I would have no problem following these guidelines. I do agree with a bit more on trolling since they are SO kind to us why not be just as kind to them too :D --

It sounds good but things like threatening users, disobeying mods, and trolling is way too short.
