The Handgun was Leon's starting handgun during Resident Evil 2. The weapon is identified as a Heckler & Koch VP70.

The Handgun is useful, with a larger magazine than Claire's Browning HP. Leon's Handgun is a preferred choice when fighting the lesser enemies of the game such as zombies and Zombie Dogs.

Leon can also find Handgun Parts (in a locked desk outside the Police Station library) which upgrade the VP70 to the VP70 machine-pistol (called the VP70 Burst ingame). Using these parts, the handgun gains a plastic stock and three shot burst functionality, and is now called VP70 Burst. The upgrade does not increase the power, but a single burst can knock down a zombie (useful in close quarters).

Upgraded, Leon can effectively take on tougher opponents such as lickers with ease when using the Burst Mode, but with the disadvantage of a much heavier ammunition usage. The handgun can now be set to either Semi-Auto Mode or 3-Shot Burst Mode.

Both versions fire 9x19mm Parabellum rounds.

VP70 Burst

Umbrella Security Service operative HUNK carries the basic VP70 handgun in his kit during the Fourth Survivor scenario,it is best recommended to use it against Zombies, Zombie Dogs and Ivy B.O.W.s

Extreme Battle Mode

• Leon's main weapon in the mini game is the VP70 Handgun.

• There is a 50% chance that the Handgun Parts will appear in Leon's game. (inside Laboratory B4) It will enable Leon to acquire the VP70 Burst via upgrading.
