The MP5 is a 9mm sub-machine gun designed by German gun manufacturer Heckler & Koch GmbH. The MP5 was the weapon of choice for the Raccoon SWAT and the Umbrella Security Service. The player is able to use the MP5 in several games, and is also featured in several cutscene sequences.

In Resident Evil games

Its first appearance in a game was during cutscene sequences in Resident Evil 2, where the USS used them against William Birkin, and by a police officer early in the game. The weapon could not be obtained nor used during gameplay. In Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, the opening cutscene showed SWAT officers using them against the zombie horde. Again, it could not be obtained within the game.

The first in-game appearance of the MP5 was in Resident Evil Survivor, in which the Under Taker units used them to defeat the zombies. It could not be obtained by the player.

The MP5's first playable appearance was in Resident Evil Zero, where it is featured as an unlockable weapon. It is unlocked by receiving an "A" ranking at the end of the game. Infinite ammunition for it can be unlocked by taking all 100 Leech Charms in the Leech Hunter minigame. The MP5 was also wielded by Umbrella paramilitary personnel in cutscenes.

In Resident Evil Outbreak, which returns to Raccoon City, the MP5 can be obtained as a regular weapon on the rooftop of the Raccoon General Hospital, during the scenario "The Hive". In the standalone expansion-pack, "File #2" - where it is incorrectly referred to as an "automatic handgun" - another MP5 can be recovered from the underground parking garage of the Raccoon City Police Department in "Desperate times". When giving Ben Bertolucci sensitive film, the player can also receive this weapon as a reward. The "End of the road" scenario also features MP5s in various locations around the city. In both titles the MP5 does 120 damage, and unlike the assault rifle, it is highly advised not to be used at close range as the weapon suffers from a lack of power and its failure to make enemies flinch. Two machineguns in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles are MP5s, though of different models.

The MP5 appeared in Resident Evil 5 as the H&K MP5. Equipped with a red dot sight, the SureFire handguard (with a laser instead of the flashlight), and the Navy trigger group. It is found in a briefcase in the beginning of chapter 2-1 in the maingame. Here it features a base firepower of 60, a reload speed of 2.70 seconds and a capacity of 45 rounds, and its maximum stats are a firepower of 120, a reload speed of 2.10 seconds and a capacity of 150 rounds. It has the special ability of "Piercing" much like the H&K P8. It takes a total of ₦69,000 to buy and fully upgrade the MP5, or just ₦67,000 if the player takes the one found in game, making it the cheapest machine gun to maintain. After beating the game and fully upgrading the MP5, the option to buy infinite ammo for 10,000 Exchange Points via the Bonus Features menu becomes available. MP5s are also used in the Mercenaries minigame by Jill in her BSAA costume and Rebecca Chambers in the Mercenaries Reunion.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City features the MP5 as a standard-issue submachine gun for the USS Delta Team, the UBCS, and SpecOps forces. This weapon is unlocked right at the start, and doesn't need to be purchased using experience points. The MP5 falls within the average range of the game's submachine gun complement, with mediocre damage, accuracy, and range, but with a moderately-high fire rate. It has a 30 round magazine, and can hold 210 rounds in reserve. While the amount of ammo appears to be large, due to the weapon's high rate of fire this ammo will disappear quickly if not properly managed. For this reason, burst firing is recommended, both to conserve ammunition and increase accuracy.

The MP5 was also featured in Resident Evil: Revelations, under the name "Machine Gun MP5" with an almost-identical configuration to the one found in Resident Evil 5. It is found during Episode 4 while playing as Jill. The MP5 has the second highest rate of fire and the second lowest damage, with a base firepower of 110, a rate of fire of 1.67, a capacity of 50, and 3 customization slots. The weapon's stats are generally similar in Raid mode, although weapons stats change with every weapon.

In Resident Evil films

The MP5 appears in Capcom's Resident Evil: Degeneration as well as the Anderson films.

In Degeneration, Angela Miller is seen using it in the airport terminal, and it is portrayed as a standard-issue weapon for her special forces team.

In Resident Evil, Rain Ocampo and Alfonso Warner used an MP5K in the first film as their primary weapons. Alice also found one in her bedroom drawer. S.T.A.R.S. members were seen using the MP5A3 in Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Alice was seen dual-wielding MP5s at one point. Alice once again utilizes this weapon during the zombie attack on the prison roof in Resident Evil: Afterlife. Oddly enough, she doesn't dual-wield this weapon like she did in the previous films.
