Revision as of 01:55, 13 October 2011
Inserted Evil is an alternate reality game made to tie in with Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, it features missions that require codes that have been hidden by the site owner to beat, Capcom then put your name in for a prize that CAPCOM will then send to your house. The game starts on this website http://www.umbrellasciences.com/ Over the next few weeks, participants will be asked to help an insider find evidence to expose Umbrella and the devastation it's about to unleash in Raccoon City.
Clues will appear on http://www.insertedevil.com/ with users then having to scour the web for the relevant materials. Once you've found an item, you'll get a code to prove you've done so. Thus far the clues appear once a week and seem to do so on Wednesdays.
As it's collected, the evidence will reveal new information about gameplay and playable characters.
Requirements to play
You need to be 18 or over and have a facebook account.
Missions
Mission 1
“ | This City department has a lot to answer for. Their work literally stinks! Spiders, alligators — who knows what else is down there? | ” |
The key phrases here are "City department" and "literally stinks!". A city department that involves odors would be a sewer department. Therefore, the player must look up "Raccoon City Sewer Department" on a searcher site (ie. Google). Being sent to raccooncitysewersdepartment.com, open the sewers map that is being offered. Hidden in the .pdf file is a URL to the next website to visit. Copying the address into your browser will send you to birkinfiles.com, a website set up by the activist to store information he has gathered on Dr. William Birkin. The second of the links is an excerpt from the doctor's very journal. At the bottom-right corner of the right page is a small piece of coding: "ORC01BIR" - Operation Raccoon City, Clue 01, Birkin. Type ORC01BIR into the answer box back on insertedevil.com and you will unlock the second mission. |
Mission 2
“ |
Flick through images of the Raccoon City art that goes skin deep. |
” |
The key words in this are "Flick", "images" and of course "Raccoon City". The word "Flick", to many internet users, will bring up thoughts on the website "flickr", a popular image-sharing site. Searching for Raccoon City will lead you to "Raccoon City Tattoo", a profile about a tattoo artist who worked in Raccoon City.
Out of the seemingly-generic tattoos detailed, one stands out; a wolf (Delta Team Wolf Pack). This is significant, as wolf and eagle-related medallions have been used by Umbrella in the past as secret keys for use in compounds; an entrance to the Arklay Research Facility, for example. Displayed also on the Wolf tattoo is "RIP 178.251.35.50". Removing the "R" from the equation gives you "IP 178.251.35.50", which means that 178.251.35.50 is a web address. You now stumble onto a section of the Umbrella Corporation website, which displays personnel files of the Delta team personnel. The pages are very similar, with one small difference: Lupo's page doesn't display the usual "1.0.2" build designation on the bottom-right corner of the page. Instead, it shows "GRRORCIP"; take note of "ORC", which will appear in all codes, and the "IP" address, which is how you found the clue. Type in GRRORCIP to unlock the third mission. |
""The stairway in City Hall. Check out the big sewer grate in the park." - The clue to hidden items in RE:ORC
Mission 3
“ |
If Van Buren is 8 and Garfield is 20, then you must learn some lessons from 13 my dear Watson. It’s a challenging start, but the highest peak is the one worth aiming for. |
” |
In this mission, the key section is "learn some lessons from 13", with "learn" and "lessons" in particular. Searching "Raccoon City School" will give you another website. The content on this one has apparently been removed on the orders of Umbrella.
This site, however, is actually a red herring. Take note that many schools in the US were named after presidents. Now, search for the 13th US president, Millard Fillmore. After searching, you may find a Fillmore Elementary School. The site will offer you a quiz, claiming to show 20 questions. Each question requires you to answer by either clicking on "warm-blooded" or "cold-blooded", and requires knowledge in biology. The first question displays a raccoon (Raccoon City); this is a warm-blooded animal. The second, a frog, is cold-blooded. The third, an elephant, is warm; the fourth, a scorpion, is cold. The fifth question will confirm that you are in the right place: "HUNK is a USS commando with an amazing ability to live through almost any situation." - Answer "cold-blooded" (relating to his personality, rather than his biological functioning). You are now on another Inserted Evil page; this one displays four files: HUNKpsycho; VectorReport; Eyewitness and InternalReport. As with the previous missions, the code is found at the bottom-right corner of one of the pages. "VectorReport" displays the code: 03HNKORC - Code #3, HUNK, Operation Raccoon City. |
Mission 4
“ | We need to get to know our enemy. Let's go back to the start, to the two who started it all and see what we can see. | ” |
The key words here are "two who started it all". Due to the Umbrella theme of the ARG, this is referring to two people in particular who started Umbrella Pharmaceutical, Inc. Four people were important in its creation - the businessmen Ozwell E. Spencer and Edward Ashford, and the researchers James Marcus and Brandon Bailey. Being businessmen, Spencer and Ashford would have been major in the company's formation. With the names "Spencer" and "Ashford", you will find ashfordandspencer.com, a website whose content has been removed on the orders of Spencer.
Also in your searching, you may find a link to a YouTube video called "Ashford And Spencer", posted by the AshfordSpencer channel. The video appears to have nothing to do with the clue, but this is a false flag. On the wall is a poster displaying the URL "russiansilverfox.com". "Silver Fox" is the nick name for the Russian monitor Nicholai Ginovaef in the English-translation of Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. Following the URL will take you to another Inserted Evil website; this time it focuses on Nicholai. Unlike the other clues where the secret code is on the bottom-right of a file, this one is hidden within the directory, itself. If you highlight all characters on the page (including spacing), you will find the code hidden underneath the links: "AGORC4" |
Mission 5
“ | What the city hears. You should listen. | ” |
Starting at the Insertedevil.com page, you will see a photograph of a radio. It is set to a frequency of 112.5 FM and 165 AM, and is set to the FM range. Search "112.5 FM". The first page will be a radio station at [soundcloud.com/radio-raccoon-112-5-fm soundcloud.com entitled "Radio Raccoon 112.5 FM". After a song ends you will hear several adverts: the first is for the Raccoon City Tattoo parlour, while the second is for the Kendo Gun Shop. The Raccoon City Tattoo has been used in a mission before, so instead search "Kendo Gun Shop". Somewhere on the first page is [www.kendosgunshop.com/ kendogunshop.com], your next entry. Clicking "Current Stock" will send you to Kendo's available weapons list. A .pdf entitled "Download specs sheet GS05ORC.pdf" will send you to a list of weapons that are likely to appear in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Look at the title closer; "GS05ORC" fits in with the coding theme - Gun Shop, Clue #5, Operation Raccoon City. Input the code into insertedevil.com to complete this task. |
Mission 6
“ | Strangely, there's nothing to see – but plenty to hear from the labs. Is Umbrella all talk? These scientists certainly are, but not everyone will understand them. That's what friends are for though right? | ” |
The keywords this time are "Umbrella" and "scientists". A search for "umbrellascientists" (one word) will lead you the YouTube channel "UmbrellaScientists", which reveals a video of two scientists talking in Spanish. They mention a parasite called "Beta NE". The conversation goes as follows:
"Birkin is acting strange lately. He looks distracted." "By his work?" "No. He's as focused as always when it's about the research. What I mean is... I don't know, he seems absent when I talk to him." "In fact, the other day I watched him talk on the phone. He looked nervous. He only answered 'yes or no'." "It looks like he's close to finding a breakthrough in Project G. Maybe the pressure is affecting him. As you know, the company has great hopes in him." "Okay. Umm... I don't really like him but no one can deny he's a genius." "Yes, it's clear that after his work on the Project G and the NE-Beta Parasite he's called to do great things. You should check out the parasite data." "I'm not even allowed to go near it. I think that's the cause of his rare behavior. He's close to finding something and maybe he wants no one to find out and take his merit." "Yes, maybe. But he should be put under control. Something's happening there. I'm not gonna say anything, though." The code is actually hidden in the YouTube video's name "Umbrella CCTV Hack ---AZEORCUAL--- ". Note that AZEORCUAL displays the three letters "ORC" in the middle, just like the preceeding codes. Azekual (The code for week 6 with k replacing the ORC) is the name of the leader of http://insertedevil.lefora.com/ a website dedicated to working together to solve the clues left by Ian Sider. Continuing your search past the code, should you wish, by searching "parasite Beta NE", you will find nebetaparasite.com. On the site you will be shown two files: "Parasite.jpg" and "ParasiteTests.pdf". Hidden in the final website (you must highlight the page text) is a hint for the game:
|
Mission 7
“ | I've been looking into chemistry and I think you should too. Here's a site to help you. Is that the Chief and what he does? Almost. Let's do this by the numbers – and the letters. | ” |
Being sent to the Dynamic Periodic Table Website, you must work out "numbers" and "letters. "Numbers" refers to the elements' "atomic numbers", while "letter" is referring to their abbrehviation.
The second part of the clue makes mention of Chief Irons; Iron is atomic number 26 on the table, and represented by "Fe"; what he does is lead the Raccoon City Police Department - a slang term for a police officer is a "copper". Copper, number 29, is represented as "Cu". Therefore, search "Fe26Cu29". You will be directed to fe26cu29.com. The code is at the bottom of "0_UmbrellaPoliceReport"; "ORCOPL30N" |
