Biography[]
S.T.A.R.S. career[]
Jill Valentine joined S.T.A.R.S. sometime before 1998, and may have served alongside Barry Burton, as it was he that recommended she transfer to Raccoon City's division as part of its Alpha Team. At the start of that year Raccoon City's S.T.A.R.S. division only consisted of Joseph Frost, though a spate of cannibalistic homicides led to an urgent need for transfers.[1] Soon after assembling, S.T.A.R.S. was tasked with another set of seemingly unrelated killings at Raccoon City College that took place after the curfew imposed by the RPD. Valentine participated in the investigation there undercover and posing as a student transferring from Grant University. In the night, Valentine stayed out after curfew to lure the killer while Burton kept nearby in case of emergency. As anticipated she was able to lure out the killer, though it was soon discovered the killer was a mutant with wolf-like characteristics. Frightened by the man, Valentine went on the run, believing a wolf was after her. When she did defend herself with her sidearm, the man died and reverted to his human appearance, convincing her and Burton she was imagining things.[2]
Later in the year, Alpha Team was sent out on a rescue mission following a loss of contact with Bravo Team, who had been sent out to investigate a suspected hideout for the cannibalistic crime ring. Alpha Team was soon set-upon by mutants and forced to hide out at the mansion the Bravos were sent to. During their stay Valentine and the others found evidence linking the killings to the outbreak of a biological weapon being studied at a laboratory beneath the mansion. The maker of the weapon, Umbrella Corporation, was also found to be paying off law enforcement personnel to protect their project, including S.T.A.R.S.' leader, Captain Albert Wesker who had knowingly led the mission into the mansion expecting total losses. Valentine along with Burton, Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers were able to escape the complex.[3]
In the aftermath of the incident at the mansion, Umbrella continued its efforts to cover-up the incident by applying pressure on S.T.A.R.S. HQ. Over the next four days, pilot Brad Vickers disappeared completely, and the S.T.A.R.S. division was dissolved with Burton and Chambers ordered to report in for reassignment. Valentine and Redfield, however, were suspended pending psychiatric evaluation.[3]
