Unbeknownst to the Institute's staff, its grounds were infiltrated by a female assassin, working for bio-weapons dealer and ex-CIA agent Glenn Arias, Maria Gomez who used Institute's own ventilatory systems to carry and spread a new virus to prevent the research of a vaccine to Arias' s viral agent.
Rebecca's rescue
Institute's staff, including Jones were zombified and started roaming the grounds in search of the living. After Professor Rebecca Chambers, former operative and medic of S.T.A.R.S. unit in 1998 in Raccoon City and Institute's lead researcher, killed her zombified colleague Doctor Aaron, she evaded the roaming zombies and sought to hide in a room with a large table, where she was soon found by Jones, who attempted to bite her but was killed by Professor Chambers when she found scissors in the table's drawers. During the fight, Rebecca read his last name on his uniform's badge and attempted to remember if the two ever interacted, imagining her asking Jones if he had a family.
