"I have a bad habit of embellishing stories, but I don't need to do it this time. At present, Raccoon City is one giant freakshow."

Kevin Ryman was an officer of the Raccoon Police Department. He survived the Raccoon City Destruction Incident in 1998, escaping on 1 October, along with seven other survivors he had met several days prior.

Biography[]

Sometime between 1996 and 1998, Kevin had applied for the department's special forces unit, S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service), but failed the screening test twice, likely due to his carefree attitude.[1][Note 1] However, he seemed determined to study and apply once again.[4][5] Kevin had previously placed in a marksman competition held by the Raccoon Police Department (RPD), having won a trophy from the event.[6] Kevin's fellow officers, Chris Redfield and Forest Speyer, had also won these events.[7]

Kevin was a regular at Jack's Bar, often catching the game on TV, drinking to excess, and challenging anyone he could to a game of darts.[8][9] Kevin had been at the bar on the night of September 24, 1998, as per usual, having a drink and watching the RNN news report on the riot at Warren Stadium earlier that day.[10]

Raccoon City Outbreak[]

On September 24, 1998, Kevin was at J's Bar along with other patrons when the T-Virus plagued Raccoon City at a critical level. The RPD became aware of the situation and prepared a citywide evacuation, in conjunction with the Raccoon City Fire Department (RFD). A roadblock to prevent an invasion at J's Bar and the surrounding locality would be assembled too late, which ultimately led to Will, the working bartender, being assaulted and bitten by a zombie, forcing Kevin and other panicked patrons to flee before the bar was overrun. Fleeing into the staff only areas of the building and eventually up to the rooftop of the bar with security guard Mark Wilkins, his fellow guard Bob, and waitress Cindy Lennox. Kevin hears fellow officers Arthur and Deputy Chief Raymond Douglas announce for all civilians to evacuate the area as it will be closed off soon due to the zombies in the area who are believed to be rioters, shortly after Bob commits suicide feeling himself starting to turn into a zombie. Jumping to the roof of the apartment building next door Kevin and the remaining two survivors make their way down to the streets only to find them in pure chaos as zombies attack civilians left and right. Startling Douglas who is currently trying to protect fleeing citizens, he admits he is surprised that Ryman is still alive. He acknowledges that the whole city has become a warzone, and that they need all the help they can get. He then orders Ryman to build a barricade with the abandoned patrol cars on the street.

Post-Raccoon's Destruction[]

Following the Raccoon City Incident, Kevin is seen speaking with someone on a gas station payphone. He states that he has a fresh start with a new job in Miami and compliments the weather, saying that it should be fun. He then jumps on his motorbike and rides toward the horizon.[11]

Personality and Relationships[]

Kevin is an all-around likeable guy, he is a dyed-in-the-wool optimist who doesn't dwell on petty matters.[1][Excerpt 1] Kevin likes having a good time and often smokes and drinks.[9][12][13] Despite Kevin's general attitude, he does not like being emotional and can be impatient with others.[14][Excerpt 2]

Kevin is laid-back and carefree to excess, often acting purely on impulse without any thought.[15] His impulsive actions, such as running an extensive tab at Jack's Bar and drinking at work, have garnered him a somewhat negative reputation.[1][9][16][17] Likewise, Kevin also proves to be fairly unreliable with basic tasks like cleaning and personal management.[18][19]

Kevin has a strong interest in sports and cars. He's an avid fan of baseball, basketball, football, and racing.

Kevin appears to have had some knowledge regarding his then soon-to-be co-worker, Leon Scott Kennedy, but the extent of their relationship (or lack thereof) is unknown.[20] He was close with his fellow officers at the precinct, namely Jean, Aaron, and Fred.[21] He also held Lieutenant Marvin Branagh in high regard.

Skills and Abilities[]

Kevin possesses superior athletic abilities, being in top physical shape and able to fight in close quarters.[1] A self-described "hell of a shot", Kevin is also able to use handguns with heightened accuracy.[1][6]

Kevin has a fairly large and up-to-date knowledge of cars and is skilled enough to race competitively.[22]

Excerpts
  1. Excerpt from the Perfect Capture Guide, p.004:
An officer working with the Raccoon Police. He possesses superior athletic abilities and is an outstanding marksman (previously winning a marksman competition). Easy-going by nature, Kevin is a likeable guy who doesn't dwell on the small things. However, he has failed the S.T.A.R.S. screening test twice, likely as a result of his carefree nature.
  2. Kevin's adlib during gameplay:
    "Your timing sucks!"
Notes
  1. S.T.A.R.S. was only active between 1996 and 1998, disbanding after the incident at the Spencer Mansion.
