The phrase '''"Machine Gun"''' is a generic term for any weapon that utilizes fully-automatic fire. In Resident Evil, '''Machine Gun''' is often the designation for one or more weapons within a game that are capable of automatic fire. These weapons often are either hard to obtain, have a limited supply of ammunition, or do less damage per shot that other firearms. While a game may feature machine guns that use a variety of different caliber rounds, the ammo collected by the player might very well be used in all machine guns, so as to keep the game from becoming too complicated.

These weapons are often a much more desired weapon in Resident Evil, although the sheer tempo of which it expends ammunition can lead to shortage of ammunition, forcing the player to nevertheless conserve even with their somewhat generous ammo per pickup count.

The phrase "Machine gun" is a generic term for any weapon that utilizes fully-automatic fire.

In the Resident Evil series, Machine Gun is the designation for Submachine guns, Assault Rifles, Light Machine guns & Heavy Machine guns. These weapons often are relatively hard to obtain, have a somewhat limited supply of ammunition, and do less damage per shot that other firearms in general bar handguns.

While a game may feature machine guns that use a variety of different caliber rounds, the ammo collected by the player might very well be used in all machine guns, so as to keep the game from becoming too complicated.

Machine Guns can be sorted into several different categories:

Sub-Machine Guns

A Sub-Machine Gun is a fully automatic weapon that fires pistol-sized cartridges. These weapons often do less damage per round, but feature a higher rate of fire.

To avoid same ammo usage problems with Handguns in the games; SMG's use custom pistol ammo, different from handgun bullets (an exception is the Submachine gun of the Outbreak series, which uses the same 9mm ammo as handguns).
