Town Majini attacking Chris.

"Majini" is the name given to human beings infected by Type 2 Plagas or Type 3 Plagas. The word "majini" is a plural Swahili word, which can refer to any number of supernatural creature (i.e. demons, fairies, genies), but can also mean "wicked people".[1][2] It is similar to the Japanese word "majin", which has an almost identical definition.[3] In 2009, many residents of the African region of Kijuju were infected by the Plaga, thus becoming Majini.

According to the files on the Majini in Resident Evil 5, it states: "The parasite attaches itself to a human host and is assimilated by the central nervous system. Infected humans lose all rational thinking facilities and are wholly subjects to control by another type of Plaga known as control Plaga (usually another infected human). Hosts may lack rational thought function, but they still retain human-level intelligence such as the ability to understand and communicate with each other. They can use tools and are surprisingly crafty when working in groups against an enemy, also they are able to operate motor vehicles and heavy firearms." As they are products of advanced strains of Plagas, they are stronger and more intelligent than Ganado.

Unlike the Plaga discovered in Europe that was injected into humans during the egg phase, waiting to reach maturity within the host's body, Type 2's infection occurs from a live mature parasite (ensuring immediate control over the host). This requires it to enter the host orally, usually by being forced directly into the potential host's mouth, where it quickly takes over the host by attaching to their central nervous system.

Like the Spanish "Ganado," the plaga within the Majini are able to control the mind of the host via the nervous system. They inhabit the spinal column similar to the Ganado Plaga and enter the host's body through the throat. Some Majini may erode a fully grown plaga (Cephalo, Kipepeo or Duvalia) from their bodies if damaged enough.

Appearance

There are three common types of Majini: the Town Majini (Civilians), the Wetlands Majini (Tribals), and the Base Majini (Soldiers).

Town

Unlike zombies, they appear to be normal humans, like the Ganados. These are the civilians who were infected. They are typically dressed in shirts and pants (such as khakis or jeans). While most are black, there are also many Arab and white ones as well. These Majini are the weakest of the three. Many have armed themselves with a range of melee weapons - such as wrenches, hatchets, and shovels. However, they can also use and fight with Molotov Cocktails and dynamites by throwing them (the latter used for setting traps) and some even use crossbows. They make their cinematic debut in chapter 1-1, but are replaced at the end of 2-3 (save for a return in chapter 3-2).

Wetlands

A new twist on the traditional Majini, these were previously members of the Ndipaya tribe from the Kijuju marshlands, and are dressed in ancestral tribal skirts, protective headdresses, and war paint- wielding large spears and wooden shields. All have a chalky skin tone, and some are scarred and mutilated from the parasite- with exposed sinew or missing lips. They are very athletic, able to leap several feet in the air to come into the level or to land on you with their spears, fashioned from many sharp bones. They can also recover from grounding blows very quickly. Fast and powerful, they have advantage over the Town Majini for being equipped with long spears that give them extra range in close combat. If you aim at them for a long enough time, they may anticipate the shot, and dip to the side or bend backwards in an almost inhuman 90 degree bend. They will also use longbows to fire exploding arrows, also the use their spears to impale their enemies and stab them, as well as fashioning crude bombs to throw. They have retained their ability to use their traditional war tactics. They make their sudden appearance in chapter 3-1 and are never seen again after 4-2.

Base

The final and most powerful of the Majini, these soldiers are far more intelligent than their predecessors, able to hide against walls and flush out their opponents with frag and flash grenades. Very organized, they often attempt to trap opponents in a crossfire or outflank them. They are dressed in various military clothing and armour, like gas masks, that not only protect them from Flash Grenades, but often makie head-shots and other lethal blows impossible. Some even clad themselves almost entirely in heavy bulletproof armour. They come armed with AK-74 assault rifles that feature green targeting lasers, while others arm themselves with stun rods, metal riot shields, and in some cases, even rocket launchers.[4]

Hosts

Resident Evil: The Deck Building Game

Majini are a basic Infected card in the Resident Evil DBG. These are Town Majini, but are not distinguished as such due to there only being one type of Majini. They have no special effects and have only 15 Health and can inflict 10 Damage to an Exploring player. They are worth 1 Decoration.

Further Notes

  • In Swahili, majini means "organism". In the language of the Zigua of Tanzania, the same word means "evil spirit".
  • In Early E3 2007 Extended Trailer of Resident Evil 5, showed the Majini having more than 2 [Break free] Attacks. It can be seen a Majini lunging head on at Chris's stomach, with the other one grabbing him from behind and slamming his head towards the ground.
    • Also, the trailer was discussed and questioned for its depiction of a white protagonist killing black enemies in a small African village, with many medias describing the game as racist. Eventually, with the revelation of a more racially diverse group of enemies, further explanation on the Plagas, as well the appearance of Sheva, caused the attacks from the media to slowly stop.
