Malacoda is the penultimate boss in Resident Evil: Revelations. It is a mass of monstrous parasitic worms created through the power of the t-Abyss virus. The worms in question are an infected form of a species in the Benedentia subfamily, which are monogenean ectoparasites and so live out their whole lives in the same host.[1][note 1] The t-Abyss creations were named after "Malacoda", a character within Dante Alighieri's Inferno, who was the leader of the Malebranche: the twelve demons who guard Bolgia Five of Malebolge, the eighth circle of Hell.

History

Development

When t-Abyss infects a host, any parasites in the body are infected as well. The unique mutations formed by the dual infections proved to be a great step in B.O.W. development.

A larval Malacoda is only about 1 cm in length, and infects its host by secreting a liquid that contains the virus. The parasite mutates inside the host and matures rapidly. The synergistic effect of the t-Abyss and the chemical secretions causes an increase in the organism's metabolism, allowing it to grow in size. The size to which the Malacoda can develop depends on the size of the host - the bigger its host, the bigger it can grow. A researcher even noted down that a Malacoda would be capable of using a whale as its host.

Encounter

Malacoda-0

The Malacoda.

A large group of Malacoda were seen swimming in the seas around the Queen Zenobia. They attacked BSAA agents Chris Redfield and Jessica Sherawat when they were attempting to board the Queen Zenobia, but they managed to repel them by using mounted guns on their boat.

When exploring the Zenobia's laboratory, Jill Valentine narrowly avoided death when a Malacoda parasite broke the aquarium glass, allowing the t-Abyss virus to flood the chamber. Fortunately, she had injected herself with a vaccine moments earlier, allowing her to avoid infection.

When Chris and Jill attempted to evacuate the Zenobia after the self-destruct countdown had been triggered, the Malacoda destroyed the rescue helicopter and revealed its full form, a gigantic whale-like organism with multiple respawning tentacles. With the help of rocket launchers dropped by Kirk Mathison, the agents managed to subdue the beast and boarded a second helicopter.

However, the whale-Malacoda revived itself and sent hundreds of tentacles after the two agents. They managed to weaken the Malacoda enough to fire a missile down its throat, killing it for good.

Biology

A fully-grown Malacoda appears as a long worm covered in tumorous growths. It has a circular maw ringed with long, thin teeth. The maw is accented by two large mandibles that hang off the head. It lacks eyes, with only smooth plates covering the top of its head. Its tail ends in another orifice ringed with similar looking teeth. It can extend to great lengths, and proved powerful enough to crush a helicopter without noticeable recoil damage.

In Revelations, a number of Malacodas inhabit what is surmised to be an infected whale. The creature's appearance is grotesquely modified from any known living whale, even sharing some physical attributes with shellfish. The Malacoda whale-host is massive, easily swallowing up most of the foredeck on the Queen Zenobia. It has a dark green color, with a large tear down its spinal column exposing several deformed vertebrae. The head tapers from the body and features a large mouth reminiscent of a carnivorous saurian, with large, irregular teeth and a strange white growth that functions as a weak point. This creature also seems to lack eyes.

The creature's body ends in what appears to be myriad, small claws that make a singular foot. These claws are used for grasping the deck of the Zenobia during the battle. It has what appears to be a flat, rounded tail that covers the front of the ship.

Gameplay

The Malacoda appears only in the game's story, and not in Raid Mode.

Further notes

  • Curiously, when fighting the Malacoda boss, one will notice that the worms will exit through wounds in the body. This forces the assumption that the creatures dwell inside of the larger creature's frame; however there seem to be far more Malacoda parasites exiting the body of the creature than it can actually contain.
  • Malacoda could infect and modify a blue whale, as mentioned in a note left in the secret research lab.
  • The Malacoda's name can be translated as "Evil Tail".

notes
  1. The Malcoda file in Revelations suffered a significant localization error whereby the family and subfamily were disregarded in favour of an unrelated species also within the Monopisthocotylea order, Wikipedia:Gyrodactylus salaris.
