"Where do you think you're going!?"
— Marguerite

Marguerite Baker was a resident at the so-called "Dulvey Haunted House", a large house in the Southern United States. She was the wife of Jack Baker and mother to Zoe and Lucas Baker.

Biography

Pre-infection

Marguerite was the matriarch of the Baker family, which consists of her husband Jack and children Lucas and Zoe. They live in a large plantation, which consists of a mansion and an old house, with mines and a pier nearby. Sometime in 2014, they encounter Mia Winters and Eveline, who had been washed ashore after being shipwrecked, and they decide to take them in to help them. Unbeknownst to them, Eveline was a bio-organic weapon who possessed telepathic powers and was obsessed with having a family of her own. Eventually, the family became suspicious of Eveline's power.

Under Eveline's Influence

Eveline slowly infected both Mia and the Baker family through mold. Marguerite consulted a doctor, who advised her to seek help, as mold was evident on her skull from an x-ray. She was pondering about returning to the doctor, but it would be too late as Eveline's infection would consume her days later, and the newly-possessed Marguerite would now view her infection as a "gift". She hid a D-Series Arm in the kid's room to keep it safe, as it can be manufactured as a serum to prevent Eveline's influence. Her descent into madness can be seen from her notebook, which can be read in the old house.

The family later withdrew completely from community life, leading to the belief the house was abandoned, with sightings of the family believed as hauntings. In actuality, Marguerite and her family were capturing people and turning them into Molded, which would add to the "family" Eveline wanted. They kept a list of the people they killed and turned, as well as newspapers reporting the dramatic increase in disappearances.

The Bakers were driven to insanity from Eveline's control, and they possess regeneration. Marguerite possesses the ability to control mutant insects that have hatched from Eveline's mold. The family also turned to cannibalism, as most of the food Marguerite cooks are human body parts harvested from their victims. Zoe, who had managed to develop a serum that would suppress her infection, flees the house and hides out in a trailer outside the mansion, where she guides kidnapped victims to escape; Marguerite and the family are aware of her betrayal, and begin antagonizing her.

In June 2017, three years later, the American TV paranormal investigation series Sewer Gators investigated the house as a possible episode, resulting in the murder of producer Andre Stickland and presenter, Peter Walken. Andre had mentioned Marguerite among the Baker family to have previously lived there.[1]

Ethan's Arrival

Ethan Winters, Mia's husband, arrived at the Baker house a month later after Eveline had sent an email message disguised as Mia. After encountering an infected Mia, Ethan's captured by Jack, and has his hacked hand stapled back by Zoe. Some time after this, Mia escapes captivity,[2][3] and attempts to flee from Marguerite, who spots her. She's aware of Mia's collusion with Zoe to escape. Marguerite pursues and eventually manages to corner her in a crawlspace in the old house. Mia, however, has videotaped the event, and it is assumed Marguerite leaves the videotape in the mansion.

Later, she prepares a dinner to "welcome" Ethan into their lifestyle, but later angrily shouts at him when he spits out the human body parts that Jack attempted to feed him.[4] She later leaves when a deputy arrives. When Ethan escapes, he discovers Mia's videotape and learns of both Marguerite's abilities and the layout of the old house.

When Ethan enters the second house in search of the D-Series Arm which can create the serum, Marguerite appears once again. Her bugs continually attack him inside the old house. She stalks Ethan through the house, attempting to stay as quiet as possible, unlike her husband. Eventually, she traps Ethan in a hole and sends her insects after him, but Ethan manages to fight off the insects and severely wounds her, causing her to fall into the hole. She clings to her lantern, summoning a swarm of thick, cockroach-like insects to cover her and damage Ethan if he stays down with her.

Final confrontation with Ethan and Death

Ethan discovers that in order to access the second floor of the house and retrieve the arm, he must retrieve Marguerite's lantern. Upon returning to the hole, he discovers that Marguerite has regenerated, but with grotesque, insect-like limbs. He tracks Marguerite to a greenhouse, where Marguerite attacks once again. During the fight, she crawls along the walls and summons insects to attack Ethan. However, Ethan manages to spot her weakness - a large hive in her stomach. After a long, tense battle, Ethan kills Marguerite and she crumbles into rocks, allowing Ethan to retrieve her lantern.

Aftermath

Marguerite's death marks the deaths of her insects. While Ethan is cocooned later by Eveline, he sees a vision of Jack, who reveals that his family, including Marguerite, used to be good people. He then pleads with Ethan to "free" his family from Eveline. After Ethan kills Eveline, he acknowledges that the Baker family were simply victims of Eveline's possession.

Gameplay

Marguerite is first encountered in Mia's videotape (released earlier as the "Lantern" demo, indicative by Marguerite's lantern). As Mia, the player would have to evade Marguerite until getting captured by her in the crawlspace. She would roam the old house to find her, and getting captured by her before the crawlspace event would result in a game over. This would teach Ethan of Marguerite's abilities prior to encountering her.

Marguerite would later once again appear when Ethan arrives at the old house, where the player would have to fight her bugs and evade capture from her. The first boss battle with her occurs when Ethan acquires the crow key but is surprised by her once he arrives at the door for the crow key. She throws Ethan into a hole, where Marguerite simply stands from the top and summon her insects to kill him. After landing several hits at her, she collapses into the hole and was covered by a swarm of insects that fill the crawlspace.

This causes Marguerite's final transformation. Ethan pursues her to the greenhouse, where is the second boss fight involving her is initiated. Marguerite grabs Ethan but is fended off. The two battle around two floors of the greenhouse, where she would both attack him on all fours, while crawling on the walls. She would flee and hide after being injured by Ethan, before returning to surprise or hunt him down. After landing enough hits at her, she would stand up and expose her weak spot - the insect hive at her stomach. The battle continues this way until a weakened Marguerite collapses and crumbles.

Abilities

She appears to have superhuman strength and speed. Her strength being no where near as strong as her husband Jack she still proves strong enough to lift Ethan with one arm and throw him down a flight of stairs. Her speed is demonstrated by her hunting down Mia Winters after she escaped: If she detects Mia, she runs towards Mia at a fast enough speed to prevent Mia from getting away, and also proceeds to lift her up by the neck. She also has the peculiar ability to control insects ranging from bees to spiders, when she fought Mia's husband Ethan in attempt to stop him from entering her "shrine" room, via use of a lantern.

Like the rest of the Baker family, she possesses the ability to regenerate from damage, although she is far from invincible. When severely wounded by Ethan, she was covered by insects and later appeared in a greenhouse with massively enlarged limbs, apparently having fused with them. In this state, she gained the ability to crawl along walls like an insect and would use this ability to ambush Ethan. More disturbingly, her lower abdomen becomes a swollen insect hive which she could discharge swarms toward Ethan, but would cause considerable pain to her as a weak spot if Ethan successfully damages it.

Quotes

"Where do you think you're going!?"

"I told you to stay outta here!!!"

"There you are! You gave us quite a scare, young lady!"

"I'm sick and tired over being sick and tired of your bullshit, girl."

"Why are you putting me through this?"

"What have I done to deserve this except open my home and feed you?"

"I don't understand you at all. This is a gift."

"This house—this house has seen more than you can imagine, and it knows."

"You just don't understand or is it that you just don't care?"

"Every step you take away from me, you spit in her face."

"You best be thankful she loves you."

"How many times do I have to tell you, god damn it? This house is off limits!"

"There are known unknowns here, and you've not paid fucking attention."

"Don't move!"

"You've been a bad girl."

"Stay right there, you little bitch!"

"I'll feed you to my babies and fertilize the garden with what was left."

"We open our home! We open our hearts! And what do you do?!"

"She loves you. She wants us to be a family, god damn it."

"You...you! All you have to do is accept her fucking gift!"

"We love you...Why can't you see that?!"

"Gotcha!"

"There's no way out of there, missy."

"Stay the fuck out!"

"Alright, you little cocksucker, let's get down to business."

"This is beyond the pale, you hear me! Beyond the pale!"

"Come here, my pretties!"

"Lord only knows what you and Zoe have been up to."
