Mario Fernández Castaño (マリオ・フェルナンデス・カスタニョ Mario Ferunandesu Kasutanyo?)[1] was a Cuerpo Nacional de Policía officer who aided Leon S. Kennedy in his investigation of the country and rescue operation of the President's daughter.

Biography[]

In autumn of 2004, Officer Fernández was ordered by his chief to act as a backup with a Newbie Officer for agent Leon S. Kennedy when he was sent to Spain in search of Ashley Graham, the US President's daughter.[2][3]

"We'll stay and watch the car, don't want to get any parking tickets."
— Fernández showing little initiative in assisting Agent Kennedy.[4]

Arriving near the remote village of Valdelobos, Officer Fernández mocked Agent Kennedy and didn't seem to take him seriously. Despite this, Leon still put his trust in the two officers. At some point in the journey, Officer Fernández stepped out of the vehicle to relief himself. As Fernández trekked into the wood for privacy, he was distracted by noises from the bushes around him. On edge, he decided to write it off as his imagination and returned to the car, apologizing for the wait. After making their way to the footpath to the village, the officers parked the vehicle and informed the agent that the locale was just ahead, offering to stay and "watch the car" rather than aid him any further.[5]

Leon spots Fernández's body.

When Leon killed the first Ganado, a village truck rammed into the cruiser, sending it plummeting into the nearby ravine.[6][7] The two officers were abducted by the locals and killed. Officer Fernández's body was disposed by the Ganado, being tied and burned on a pyre in the middle of the town square.

Further notes[]

  • In original, the officers can be heard shouting and shooting at the truck, indicating they were trying to stop it from ramming them, a futile attempt.
  • Until the remake in 2023, the names of the two officers who escort Leon were unknown, with the Capcom-Famitsu biohazard 4 kaitaishinsho guide referring to Mario as Beard Cop (ヒゲ警官; Hige keikan?).
    • Coincidentally enough, despite being given a full name in-game, the character is still credited as Veteran Officer in both the subtitles and end credits.
    • He shares his name with a mixing enginer from Spain who has worked in various audio localization projects for Resident Evil, like Resident Evil 4 (2023), Resident Evil: Resistance and Resident Evil Village.
    • In the original, his coat read "Agente Johnson" (Officer Johnson).
