Mario Fernández Castaño (マリオ・フェルナンデス・カスタニョ Mario Ferunandesu Kasutanyo?)[1] was a Cuerpo Nacional de Policía officer who aided Leon S. Kennedy in his investigation of the country and rescue operation of the President's daughter.

Biography[]

In autumn of 2004, Officer Fernández was ordered by his chief to act as a backup with a Newbie Officer for agent Leon S. Kennedy when he was sent to Spain in search of Ashley Graham, the US President's daughter.[2]

"I'm gonna let you in on a little secret, just between us. A lot of people have gone missing around here, and it's been that way for a while now."

Arriving near the remote village of Valdelobos, Officer Fernández mocked Agent Kennedy and didn't seem to take him seriously, calling him "Yanqui". After making their way to the Hunter's Lodge on the village outskirts, Fernández stepped out of the vehicle to meet his needs, citing "nature calls", while his partner jokingly made fun of him for "drinking the bar". As Fernández trekked into the wood for privacy, he was distracted by noises from the bushes around him. On edge, he decided to investigate the noises alone. After some time had passed, the rookie officer noted Fernández's prolonged absence and sent Agent Kennedy to track down his fellow officer.[2]

Agent Kennedy exited the vehicle and proceeded to follow the officer's trail, arriving at a nearby cabin where Fernández's bloody officer badge was retrieved.[3] After Leon defeated the first Ganado, Fernández screamed out, leading Kennedy to the basement of the cabin wherein he'd find Officer Fernández's cadaver, having had his throat slit only moments earlier.[4] Sometime after his death, Officer Fernández's headless body was disposed by the Ganado, being fed to Del Lago.[5]

Further notes[]

  • Until the remake in 2023, the names of the two officers who escort Leon were unknown, with the Capcom-Famitsu biohazard 4 kaitaishinsho guide referring to Mario as Beard Cop (ヒゲ警官; Hige keikan?).
    • Coincidentally enough, despite being given a full name in-game, the character is still credited as Veteran Officer in both the subtitles and end credits.
    • He shares his name with a Spanish mixing engineer who has contributed to several audio localization projects for the Resident Evil series, including Resident Evil: Resistance, Resident Evil Village, and Resident Evil 4 (2023).
