Matt Addison was the brother of Lisa Addison, posing as a Raccoon City Policeman who accompanies Alice, Spence and the commandos into the Hive. It wasn't until later the revelation he and his sister were activists trying to bring down Umbrella was revealed. He later went on to become the Nemesis.

Background

Matt is first introduced when he grabs Alice inside the mansion. He claims to be a police officer working for the RPD when he is apprehended by one of the masked Umbrella Corporation commandos during a mission into The Hive. However, it is later revealed that the I.D. was a fake, only being used to gain access into The Hive. The mission was to investigate the Red Queen's actions after sealing the facility and killing everyone within. Both Alice and Matt are taken into the underground complex.

The Hive

Matt is handcuffed and watched over by Rain and J.D., while the other team members continue into the Red Queen's chamber. After successfully deactivating the Red Queen, all the doors in the facility open, releasing a horde of zombies. After the discovery of a survivor Rain stumbles upon, Matt states that the blood from the woman is coagulated, and that this process does not occur until after death. The team is then slowly surrounded by legions of the undead Umbrella employees. Rain, J.D., and Chad Kaplan proceed to dispose of them. Several bullets hit one of the surrounding tanks, which causes an explosion. Matt spots the keys and uncuffs himself to escape and continue his search for his missing sister, Lisa Addison.

Matt is joined by Alice, to whom he explains his mission was to expose Umbrella's dark secrets. He explains that his sister was working in the research facility in order to smuggle out a sample of the t-virus. He also reveals she had a contact within the Hive, who has access to security codes. Matt is later attacked by his now zombified sister, which is then killed by Alice, saving Matt's life.

Escape

Realizing that the mission has now become a survival fight, the team attempt to escape the complex via train. Before successfully escaping, the train is attacked by an Advanced Licker, which scratched Matt on his arm and killed Kaplan. After the monster is killed, Matt and Alice escape the complex. Matt's arm begins to mutate due to an infection from the T-virus.

Before Alice has a chance to administer the Anti-Virus, Umbrella scientists seize both Alice and Matt. Dr. Isaacs orders that Matt be placed into the Nemesis program.

His Mutation As Nemesis

In the 2004 film Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Matt was only shown through Alice's flashbacks, and it is then revealed that Matt Addison was actually Nemesis (played by Matthew G. Taylor), a direct result to the Nemesis Program. He was the main antagonist of the movie.

Death

Nemesis

Nemesis in the film Resident Evil: Apocalypse

It is unsure if he remembers Alice from the Hive incident after being impaled by the jagged piece of metal, but his actions would strongly suggest that he does. Before the nuclear strike at Raccoon City, he helps Alice fight against the Umbrella commandos. Nemesis was apparently killed when a shot-down helicopter crash-landed onto him (in the novel adaptation of the movie, it is revealed that he is only incapacitated under the helicopter, and that he doesn't actually die until the nuclear strike occurs. The novel also reveals that Nemesis was like another consciousness in Matt's body that had more control over himself than he did, but he regained control at the end, with Matt being the one who is truly helping Alice instead of Nemesis).

Trivia

  • David Boreanaz was originally going to play Matt Addison, but turned down the part to work on his TV series Angel.
  • Aside from archive footage from the first film featuring shots of Eric Mabius, the only person to return after the previous film is Milla Jovovich.
