Milla Jovovich (born Milica Jovović; Serbian Cyrillic: Милица Јововић; Russian: Милла(Милица) Йовович; December 17, 1975) is a Ukrainian-American actress, musician and model best known for her role as Leeloo in The Fifth Element and Alice in the live-action films based on Capcom's Resident Evil series.

Work in Resident Evil

Jovovich was already aware of the Resident Evil franchise through her younger brother, Marco who was an enthusiastic Resident Evil gamer, and wanted to be in the film as a present.[1][2] When a New York casting agency began calls in October 2000,[3] Jovovich had hoped to land the part of Jill Valentine,[citation needed] but won the Alice part instead in December after three callbacks.[4][5] When principal photography began in March 2001, the script had been significantly altered to give a much greater presence to the character of "Rain" who, set to die in Cafeteria B, would instead continue until the climax due to the rising popularity of actress Michelle Rodriguez. These changes almost led to Jovovich walking out of the project, but was convinced to stick it out by director Paul W.S. Anderson.[citation needed]

Jovovich received stunt coaching by Jaymes Butler which allowed her to perform all her scenes with the exception of the pipes due to Butler's concerns over the wires.[6] Jovovich was very physical in her stunt work, and by the conclusion of the filming had injured both Anderson and co-star James Purefoy, and received injuries herself during stunt work as the red dress could not hide padding.[6][7] In the weekends between shoots, Jovovich continued her contracted shoots with L'Oréal, where she discovered she had cervical cancer and was soon after treated.[8]

After the film's release in early 2002, Jovovich was brought back for the sequel, Resident Evil: Apocalypse. With a closer relationship to Anderson, Jovovich was able to add her own ideas to the film and is credited with having it set during a heatwave as reason for Sienna Guillory to wear Jill's outfit from Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.[9]

Final Chapter

Personal life

Jovovich began dating Anderson not long after filming of Resident Evil concluded, and became engaged in March 2003.[10] On November 3, 2007, Jovovich gave birth to their first child, a girl named Ever Gabo Anderson. The two finally married in 2009. In 2013 the family was threatened by a stalker, resulting in Jovovich taking advice from authorities and responding less to Tweets from strangers.[11] In mid-2014 Milla fell pregnant with their second child, another daughter, which resulted in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter being delayed. She was born on April 1, 2015.
