The Molotov cocktail; mockingly named after the 1940s Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov, is the generic name for a variety of improvised incendiary weapons, also known as the petrol bomb; gasoline bomb or Molotov bomb. Simple to make, they are frequently used by rioters.

In Resident Evil

The Molotov Cocktail is a weapon first introduced in Resident Evil 0. It is created by placing Gasoline inside of an Empty Bottle; both of which you can find multiple times throughout the game. The weapon is best used against the Mimicry Marcus that Billy and Rebecca encounter in the Mansion.

The Molotov is utilized again in Resident Evil: Outbreak, and its sequel, Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2; this time using a newspaper, a wine/whiskey bottle, and a lighter. This weapon is effective against any regular enemy, but cannot harm bosses.

In Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, the Molotov Cocktails are replaced by Incendiary Grenades, though used by enemies.

Strategy

In Resident Evil 0, molotovs are fairly common. While effective against most enemies, the are singularly effective against a Mimicy Marcus, often destroying the mass of leeches after three attacks. However, they can be rather problematic to aim, and there is a short wind up animation before the cocktail is thrown. The splash will cause enemies within a short range to burst into flame, meaning there is a reasonable margin for error.

In Resident Evil 5, molotovs are commonly utilized by Majini. They can do significant damage, but their main threat is allowing other enemies to close in. Fortunately, they will often fall short with their initial throw, giving time to quickly take them out. Shooting the throwing arm will cause the molotov to be dropped and explode at their feet. However, molotov cocktails do damage to other majini; it can be an effective tactic to leave the thrower alive to thin out other enemies.

Trivia

  • Molotov cocktails burn out much faster than they generally do in real life for game balance purposes.
  • Enemies who run into the flames after detonation burst aflame as well, making it somewhat useful for blocking a path.
  • Molotovs are commonly used by the motorcycle Majini.
  • Shooting the thrower's arm before they toss a molotov will cause them to drop it at their feet, damaging them severely.
  • In Resident Evil 4, if the player stays for too long in the tower in the Pueblo, ganado will be unable to reach Leon, but will attack with molotov cocktails.
