Morpheus D. Duvall was developed for Resident Evil: Dead Aim. Duvall was conceived of by the design team on the pitch of there being a female Tyrant, an idea proposed for Resident Evil 0 which was ultimately rejected; this enemy would additionally serve as the game's final boss. Scenario writer Noboru Sugimura agreed to the pitch, but further suggested the enemy be made more unique as an "Okama". In Japan "Okama" exists as both a derogatory term for the LGBT community and a bar subculture catering to trans women and transvestites. The design and characterisation therefore was built around Duvall's fluidity with masculine and feminine attributes, and while Japanese dialogue would alternate between masculine and feminine particles the English dub would replicate this idea through voice changes. Promotional material for the game would joke about Duvall being a "sexy monster wearing high heels due to the mysterious power of a virus".[1]
