NEST

Localization This structure or entity is known in the Original Script as NEST. However, it appears under the name, "Raccoon City Underground Research Facility" in English localizations.

The Raccoon City Underground Laboratory was a large subterranean laboratory located in the outskirts of Raccoon City that was operated by the Umbrella Corporation and administered by William Birkin.

This sprawling facility, built primarily for the research and development of the G-virus, could be accessed via an underground cable car system that linked the facility to the sewers beneath the Raccoon City Police Department and the Umbrella Research Center, a private train station on the lowest level, as well as a personal elevator that allowed access to the Research Center's train station above that.

History

The Facility was built by Umbrella specifically for Dr. Birkin's G-virus research.

During the events of the Arklay Mountains outbreak, this facility, along with the numerous other Arklay facilities, was attacked by the revived James Marcus and his leeches. During this time, the researchers seemingly evacuated the infected areas. Upon the entrance of Rebecca Chambers, and an attempt by Albert Wesker to destroy the research center, the creatures were exterminated.

In late September, William was severely wounded by a U.S.S. team. When the t-Virus spread, it reached the city from the sewers, after being consumed by rats, who in turn infected the water supply. However, this time, the facility was safer. During the crisis, the experimental Hunter Rs' were released, killing at least ten scientists. One of the researchers managed to alter the temperature controls, freezing the creatures in their tracks.

Not long later, Monica - a researcher, attempted to steal a G-embryo sample. During the exploration of the facility by an ex-researcher, Yoko Suzuki and three other survivors reverted the temperature controls to normal in an attempt to use the turntable. Luckily, they managed to kill the Hunters before escaping.

They then activated the turntable and rode it to the outside world. At the same time, Monica rejected the G-embryo, which she had somehow become host to. The creature followed the survivors up the shaft and attacked them. However, it was defeated and the survivors escaped.

On the early hours of September 30, five survivors arrived at the facility in hopes of escaping via the underground train: Claire Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, Sherry Birkin, Annette Birkin and Ada Wong.

However, the t-Virus had, since the visit by Yoko, spread throughout the facility further. Claire and Annette worked together to produce "DEVIL," a cure for Annette's daughter Sherry, who had also been impregnated by her father, William. At the same time, Leon and Ada tried activating the train. Ada was injured saving Leon from a T-103 which had been stalking them since the Sewers. Her severe injuries led Leon to think she was dead.

Prior to shooting Claire for supposedly killing her husband, Annette was attacked by a mutated William, who slashed through her body with his talons before escaping. On her way to the train, Claire was attacked by William. She eventually managed to defeat him him, permanently, before escaping.

On the escape train, Claire gave the cure to Sherry moments before she succumbed to G, curing her almost instantly. The trio then left Raccoon City as the facility self-destructed as a safety-precaution. However, a second self-destruct sequence was activated on the train after biohazardous tissue was detected - William. After destroying the once brilliant scientist-turned organic blob, the three escaped the train to the outside world, with William killed in the blast.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

The lab is featured in RE:ORC when Alpha Team and Delta Team go to retrieve the G-Virus sample. HUNK and Delta fight their way through the lab, and rendevouz with another Alpha Team member, the Alpha member and HUNK get the sample off William gunning him down in the process. William's Spec-Ops escorts arrive and Delta Team manage the defeat them. William injects himself with the last sample of the G-Virus and mutates into a creature known as "G" and kill all of Alpha Team besides HUNK. HUNK and Delta Team run from the muated Birkin through a exit tunnel, HUNK is seperated from Delta in the process. Delta Team manage to William long enough for HUNK to rescue them. HUNK then goes back for the G-Virus sample.

Although this the same lab from RE2 is different from the RE2 lab in many ways it is bigger and has more areas, although the original areas are still there.

Main Structure

1F

The "dummy" building from which the cable car system connects to the factory, and which allows access to the turntable elevator. It is disguised as an abandoned factory, warehouse and train marshaling yard. A room in this level monitors power to the main elevator. This floor has two levels, an upper and a lower - the lower is located underground.

B1F

This level as well the next three beneath, contain the main power room and self destruct mechanisms for the laboratory. Access is via elevator to B4.

B4F

The first of the main laboratory levels, this is where the turntable usually stops. Located here are the central core power transformer, several dormitories for the researchers, assorted laboratories including a B.O.W. storage room, low temperature experiment room, and operating theatre. Access to the lower levels (B5, B6 and B7) is expedited through a large air duct.

B5F

The second of the main laboratory levels, this is where Birkin's main laboratory is located, as well as various computer and security monitoring rooms. Also located here is a large service elevator to the B8 train platform.

B6F

Located here is a break room for the researchers as well as further monitoring facilities. At the time of Outbreak, areas of this level are unacceptable, suggesting the facility has yet more areas that remain unexplored.

B7F

Located here are various chemical storage rooms and yet more monitoring equipment. This is the lowest level that can be conventionally accessed.

B8F

This being the very bottom level of the facility, the underground train platform is located here. The tunnels leading from the platform eventually lead into city limits.

Trivia

This may be one of the most visited locations throughout the Resident Evil series. It appears in Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil Outbreak, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.
