(An alternate timeline in the Prime universe)
NEST 2 was a secret Umbrella Corporation research facility located underneath Raccoon City’s Spencer Memorial Hospital. It was established as an off-shoot facility of Umbrella's main NEST facility, also underneath the city. Unlike NEST, which was centered around G-Virus and t-Virus research, NEST 2's primary function was to develop failsafes against Umbrella's products, such as vaccines for biological agents and anti-B.O.W. weapon systems, in order to keep said products under control and facilitate their weaponization. The facility could have been entered through a primary entrance in the form of a freight elevator located in a secret restricted underground section of Spencer Memorial, and a secondary entrance in a container yard located elsewhere in the city.
History[]
NEST 2 was constructed by Umbrella USA after NEST in the early-mid 1990s, prior to 1998. Like other Umbrella facilities, NEST 2 enforced a strict set of employee regulations, such as the prohibition of unauthorized access by unapproved visitors and the removal of work-related data and materials.[1]
The facility received regular shipments of chemicals, B.O.W. test subjects and other supplies necessary for research via trucks which would enter the warehouse section located at the primary entrance, run by the Shipping and Processing division. Test subjects would then be taken to the main lab area for testing. The Bioweapon Synthesis Team was responsible for procuring B.O.W.s and conducting live testing with them to accumulate combat data, while the VRC, of which Dr. Nathaniel Bard was the chief researcher, was responsible for producing vaccines for viruses such as the t-Virus, using sophisticated production and synthesis machinery. The facility also housed a disposal center where B.O.W.s to be disposed of would be dissolved using a mixture of potent industrial solvents.[2]
Dr. Bard made a breakthrough in t-Virus research with the creation of a potent vaccine against the virus. Documenting his findings, he noted that the samples of t-Virus antigens and adjuvants which he presently had were, when processed by the facility's proprietary equipment, capable of yielding over 1000 times more than standard materials, allowing for large batches to be made.[3]
In addition, NEST 2 designed and built advanced weaponry for use against runaway B.O.W.s. One example was the Ferromagnetic Infantry-use Next Generation Railgun (FINGeR), developed in conjunction with the United States Army via their Electromagnetic Weapons Program. Led by Lead Researcher Dr. Cornell Garner, a functional prototype was developed by July 1998. However, there were still issues with the railgun's output control and portablity which were being addressed by the research team.[4]
In August 1998, a previously-unseen t-Virus mutation began appearing during B.O.W. testing: the Pale Head. These new mutants were capable of rapidly regenerating bodily damage, meaning that only prolonged extreme trauma would permanently keep them down. In light of this development, Shipping and Processing manager Gabrielle Reed filed a formal request for high-powered weaponry normally allocated to the Bioweapon Synthesis Team to be issued to all employees under her supervision out of safety concerns for handling them.[5]
In order to carry out live testing, Umbrella would often abduct people from Raccoon City and force them to fight the B.O.W.s and irregular mutants in order to verify their usefulness as products. Among them were Martin Sandwich, Tyrone Henry, Becca Woolett, Valerie Harmon, Samuel Jordan and January Van Sant, who were all sent to a simulation and testing area with mock-ups of various locations to be pitted against the creatures by Umbrella Intelligence Division officer Daniel Fabron.[6] The facility was also fiercely protective of its research data, going as far to feed an employee caught attempting to smuggle out company secrets to a Hunter β.[7]
Raccoon City Destruction Incident[]
During the early days of the Raccoon City Destruction Incident, Umbrella personnel began discreetly ferrying away patients who had succumbed to Cannibal Disease from the Spencer Memorial Hospital above to NEST 2 to study them. Designated teams would collect these patients instead of hospital mortuary teams and admit them through the primary entrance. On September 24, this transfer process was witnessed by Miranda, a nurse working at the hospital, forcing operations to be temporarily halted.[8][9]
Elsewhere in the facility, Dr. Bard gave orders to mass-produce his t-Virus vaccine. Despite this, the t-Virus eventually overwhelmed the facility and most, if not all, of the researchers were killed or turned into zombies, with the Pale Heads also on the loose.[10] Dr. Bard was also murdered by UBCS sergeant and Monitor Nikolai Zinoviev while awaiting rescue in Spencer Memorial Hospital.[11]
Late into the night of September 30, UBCS mercenary Carlos Oliveira entered the facility from the hospital in search of any remaining stock of the vaccine in order to broker an agreement with the US Government to call off the impending Sterilization Operation. Former S.T.A.R.S. operator Jill Valentine followed his trail, hoping to find him. Entering the warehouse area, she discovered that Zinoviev was also in the facility. After making her way through the warehouse and regrouping with another UBCS operative, Tyrell Patrick, the two searched the halls of the facility, only to be ambushed by the mutated second form of the Nemesis T-Type. It impaled Tyrell with a tentacle and killed him, sending Valentine on the run.[12] While being repeatedly stalked and harassed by the Nemesis, Valentine was able to manufacture a single sample of the vaccine using the available resources and equipment.[13] The chase eventually led Valentine to the disposal facility, where Zinoviev surprised her and stole the vaccine, leaving her to fight the Nemesis.[14] It was at this point that Oliveira reappeared, having failed to secure any more vaccine samples, and assisted Valentine in fighting the Nemesis, culminating in submerging it with the facility's corrosive solvents.[15][16]
Valentine resumed her pursuit of Zinoviev, catching up to him and engaging in a standoff in the room where the FINGeR was being stored. However, they were interrupted by the sudden arrival of the Nemesis Alpha parasite; with the original T-103 host body completely dissolved, the parasite quickly mutated in a desperate attempt to survive, becoming a gigantic, hideously-deformed blob.[17] Zinoviev made his escape with Carlos chasing after him, while Valentine began a final showdown against the Nemesis. She incapacitated it with two shots from the FINGeR before jamming the railgun into the creature's mouth and finishing it off for good with one final blast, ripping it apart and tearing a hole through multiple walls.[18] With the facility's structure now catastrophically damaged, Valentine exited through the secondary entrance only to find Oliveira unconscious at the exterior helipad. Zinoviev and Valentine fought, with Zinoviev shooting and destroying the vaccine vial in the process. Oliveira regained consciousness shortly afterwards and put Zinoviev in a chokehold, allowing Valentine to immobilize him with a shot to the chest. Valentine and Oliveira ignored his offers to reveal the identity of the third party he was working for and abandoned him, flying out of Raccoon City in an Umbrella helicopter at daybreak on October 1.[19][20]
What was left of NEST 2 was presumably destroyed by the explosive force of the thermobaric missile launched at the city.
