The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is the largest police force in the United States.

History

The NYPD is one of the oldest police departments established in the U.S., tracing its roots back to the nineteenth century.

Municipal Police were established in 1845, replacing an old night watch system. Mayor William Havemeyer shepherded the NYPD together, originating the phrase "New York's Finest." In 1857, it was tumultuously replaced by a Metropolitan force, which consolidated many other local police departments in 1898. Twentieth-century trends included professionalization and struggles against corruption.

The NYPD has a broad array of specialized services, including the Emergency Service Unit, K9, harbor patrol, air support, bomb disposal, counter-terrorism, criminal intelligence, anti-gang, anti-organized crime, narcotics, public transportation, and public housing. The NYPD commands 77 Precincts, 12 Transit Districts and 9 Housing Police Service Areas across the city.

In 2016, Glenn Arias dispersed concentrated amounts of the A-Virus' Trigger Strain across the city of New York in his plans to exact revenge on the U.S. for the death of his wife. This plan was enacted with use of his bottled water company, A-GUA Industries, spreading the Latent Strain of the A-Virus through infected products. Tanker trucks from the company would then drive to designated areas across the city to release the Trigger Strain in gas form, mutating infected people into Zombies. As the BSAA confronted the threat by eliminating the trucks and apprehending Glenn Arias in his hideout, the NYPD was forced to attempt regaining order of the chaos down on street level. Able bodied police officers fought against the Zombies until the BSAA acquired the cure to the A-Virus and dispersed it over the city of New York, reverting those infected into normal humans once more.
