"The Escape Ends Here
Clancy tried his best, but couldn't outrun Jack. Dragged to the basement staircase and thrown inside, Clancy is still gagging on the mold-choked air as Jack slams the door on his escape, saying "You just sit tight, now... I've got some friends I want you to meet."
"
— Nightmare opening scene

Nightmare is a minigame for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. It was released as part of the "Banned Footage Vol. 1" DLC on 31 January 2017 on the PlayStation 4, with a PC and Xbox One release on 21 February.

Plot[]

Due to the mode being mainly a Survival mode, there is little plot, although the overall set up shows Jack locking Clancy in the basement of the Baker house for him to die to the Molded down there. Desperate to survive, Clancy now must do whatever he can to make it to the morning.

Gameplay[]

The Nightmare scenario has two game types: "Nightmare", which is the standard version of the game, and "Night Terror" which is harder. There is also a "Rewards" menu which tracks the player's accumulated points from either gamemode and shows which rewards have been unlocked.

Players take control of Clancy Jarvis, starting with no items and 20 inventory slots. The player begins in the Incinerator Room, and is locked within the Processing Area for the duration of the mode.

Nightmare is a round-based survival horde challenge, where waves of Molded attack the player. The main objective is to "Survive Until Dawn" battling against the said enemies and ultimately Jack Baker. The player has a new currency, Scrap, which they must earn and use to craft items and skills in order to survive.

Next to where the player begins is the workbench, where they can spend their Scrap on items to defend themselves, and skills to augment their capabilities passively. The price of all items and skills will increase with each successive purchase.

Scraps can also be used to activate traps attached to walls or on the ground by locating them and paying the required price. Some traps may be purchased multiple times, becoming more expensive - and in some cases, more powerful, with each level bought.

The player will start with 1000 scrap. To earn more, the player must activate Compactors located around the map. Compactors generate a steady flow of Scrap, but players must travel to the compactor to collect any. Additionally, bonus Scrap is rewarded at the end of each round, dependent upon how many enemies the player has killed, and whether or not Jack was present and defeated.

There are five rounds, each indicated by the hours up from midnight to 5 am. Enemies will spawn throughout the rounds, with Jack appearing in rounds 2 and 5 in his typical stalking form from the main game and with his chainsaw respectively.

Each round's end is signaled with an alarm and the Compactors' functionality ceasing within 40 seconds. The Compactors will remain inactive until the next round starts. Players are required to eliminate any remaining enemies in order to progress to the next hour/round. Any Scrap that are yet to be collected by the player when the Compactors' production ceases do not disappear when the round ends and are still available to be picked up later.

Some areas can be unlocked through the use of Corrosive, providing more accessible areas -ergo, more compactors - as well as more available traps.

Completing the mode tallies the player's score, which is then used to determine which Rewards the player unlocks. Rewards unlock more options for players to craft in the game mode for a subsequent play-through; more weapons, more starting scraps, new skills, and so on.

Night Terrors[]

The difference between Nightmare and Night Terrors are as follows:

  • Scrap compactors produce 50% less scrap (initial produce 50 instead of 100 each time)
  • All enemies are stronger and also attack more frequently as well having more health (somewhat similar to Madhouse mode)
  • Large increase in the amount of Quick Molded which appear throughout
  • The first time Fat Molded spawn, two will appear at once instead of just one
  • Increase in the strength and amount of Molded which spawn alongside Jack
  • More Scrap is rewarded upon clearing a wave as well as defeating Jack
