"Prostrate yourselves! This is our Holy Body. Our divine providence! And soon... such a profound blessing for all...las plagas! Welcome, my children. I am Osmund Saddler. The speaker for our Lord."
— Osmund Saddler to Leon Scott Kennedy and Ashley Graham

Osmund Saddler (オズムンド・サドラー Ozumundo Sadorā?), often referred to as Lord Saddler, was the leader of Los Iluminados, a neopagan cult and paramilitary organisation. He was a bio-weapons research chief who resided in an isolated Spanish region. In the early 2000s, Saddler's leadership ensured the cult's dominance in the region through the weaponisation of the mind-controlling Plaga parasites to suit his plans for world domination. He was killed in 2004 during a USSTRATCOM mission to rescue Ashley Graham, the President's daughter whom Saddler's organisation had taken hostage.

Biography[]

Background[]

Osmund Saddler was a descendant of the ganados that were banished from the region of Valdelobos for worshipping Las Plagas with seven of his ancestors, Hester Saddler, Keenan Saddler, Adam Saddler, Francis Saddler, Garrett Saddler, Issac Saddler and Joseph Saddler being forced to live on the nearby island in the region.[1][2][3]

Saddler entered the region in the early 2000s, intent on possessing the Plaga to gain financial and military influence on the world stage. Las Plagas, as recorded in local folklore, had been hidden in ancient ruins below the First Castellan's new castle which had been sealed away by Hipólito Salazar, The Sealer. Sometime after, Ramón Salazar suffers an ilness in which he is ill-fated to never reach adulthood much to his mother Catalina's horror who had invited Saddler and his cult to treat her son against her husband Diego Salazar's wishes.[4] The cult saves Salazar by parasitizing him with the dominant species of Plaga and later kill Diego with Catalina disappearing afterwards, resulting in Ramón inheriting the castle at a young age.[4] To gain access to the ruins, Saddler learns of his cruelty and treacherous actions and manipulated the young Ramón Salazar into giving him access to the property by converting him to his cult, then making him feel guilty over his ancestor's actions and seek redemption.[5] Through Salazar, Saddler was able to gain access to the ruins with the aid of an excavation team. Expecting to find only fossilized remains, Saddler and his team were surprised to find that the excavation team had inhaled spores from the remains encased in amber that soon grew into full-grown Plaga.[6] While this turn of events delighted Saddler, he nevertheless instructed everyone to exercise more caution in recovering the rest of Plaga amber deposits.[7]

Saddler began research on the rejuvenated parasites, culminating to the development of a new subspecies of Plaga, Superior Species Plaga, which allowed the host to retain their cognitive functions and mutate their bodies if the situation called for it on the same vein with Dominant Species Plaga yet still had to answer the latter. However, both Superior Species and Dominant Species corrupt the host despite allowing them to retain their sense of self, leading to them become so obsessed with carrying out their goals/beliefs and lose any sense of reason,[8][9] the exact thing that happened to Saddler himself.

The conversion of Father Bitores Méndez, the village priest and chief, marked a significant expansion in the cult's power. Fr. Méndez was the village priest as well as its elder, leading both the political and religious affairs of the region. By turning him into a disciple, Saddler was able to convince almost the entire rural community to abandon their Catholicism and turn to the cult. Injected with Plagas as part of a cleansing ritual to wash away sin, the villagers soon fell under Saddler's control. When this process was complete, he used them as both a labor force and security, ordering them to kill any trespassers, while maintaining the image that the village was operating as usual to avoid suspicion from the Spanish government.[10]

"You see, we are all connected through the holy body. You need only accept this sacred gift, like she did."
— Saddler explaining the Iluminados movement to Leon S. Kennedy.[11]

Saddler's luck changed when he encountered Jack Krauser, the former USSOCOM who disillusioned by both disastrous outcome of Operation Javier and how US government dealt it thus inspired to seek out and obtain "unadulterated power". Just as Los Iluminados possessed the power Krauser sought Saddler found means to gain influence in the US government through the former. Thus, he had Krauser conspired with his acquaintances back at US to kidnap President Graham's daughter Ashley Graham, coordinating a successful mission that disabled her protection. Krauser then had Ashley transferred to Valdelobos, where she was held and infected with the Plaga parasite.[12] Saddler subsequently rewarded Krauser with his very own Dominant Species Plaga and a station at Los Iluminados' own base, even allowing him to fortify said base and provide the cult with modern weaponry such as RPGs with specialized red warhead[13][14]. Around this time, researchers under Saddler's employment discovered the existence of unique Dominant Species Plagas. Through a sample of one such Plagas, dubbed as "The Amber", these Plagas shared same quirks as their regular counterparts while possessing a special ability unique to them alone; empowering other Plagas the latter and subordinate Plagas alike. Upon learning this, Saddler became wary of The Amber's powers knowing dire ramifications from allowing it to fall into wrong hands and subsequently had it secured[15][16][17][18].

Ashley's kidnapping didn't go unnoticed by US government. As the investigation to identify suspected mole was underway, USSTRATCOM dispatched one of its agents, Leon S. Kennedy, to find her in Valdelobos. Though he managed to find Ashley there, they must contend with Los Iluminados, Saddler's growing influence through growing Plagas inside them, and even the mole himself who revealed to be Jack Krauser. However, the two won't see Saddler himself in person until they reached Amber Storeroom. Saddler attempted to force Ashley to shoot Leon with his own gun after the latter shot him to no avail thanks to his regeneration, but her efforts to resist ended up jamming it in process. Thus, he decided to bring her into Sanctuary where her complete assimilation into Plaga hivemind and induction into Los Iluminados may be done.
