Leon parrying the Chainsaw Man's attack.
The parry is a gameplay mechanic featured in Resident Evil 4 remake.
Overview[]
Parry allows the player to completely avoid incoming attacks from an enemy if timed correctly provided if the player character is equipped with a knife. Almost all enemy attacks can be parried ranging from a normal melee attack of a Ganado to a more dangerous instant kill attack such as from the Mandíbula. A button prompt will appear when an instant kill attack can be parried, making a clear warning in order to avoid certain death. A unique parry animation will also play should the instant kill attack is parried.
A Perfect Parry can be performed if a parry is done precisely as soon as the enemy attack is about to land. Attacks countered by Perfect Parries will cause the attacking enemy to be staggered, leaving them vulnerable to a counterattack.
Each Parry causes the currently equipped knife to deteriorate, decreasing its durability gauge with instant kill attacks significantly decreasing the durability gauge on each parries (one or two instant kill attacks are enough to completely degrade a knife). Knives such as Boot Knife or Kitchen Knife will be discarded if their gauge is depleted completely. However, the Combat Knife, Primal Knife, and the Fighting Knife can be repaired to the Merchant. A Knife's durability can be upgraded allowing for more parries.
