Part 1: Academy of Tragedy is an issue of the Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire manga series, known as BIOHAZARD marhawa desire in Japan. There, it is referred to as "Episode 1: "Academy of Tragedy" (第1話 惨劇の学園 Dai 1-wa Sangeki no gakuen ) (or otherwise "School Tragedy"). It was first published in Issue #13 of the Weekly Shōnen Champion Extra's 2012 series, but was later on re-published in the first tankōbon volume on June 8.
Dr. Doug Wright, a professor at Bennett University in Singapore, teaches his Bacteriology class about the increasing threat of bioterrorism from agents such as Anthrax. Among the class is his nephew, Ricky Tozawa, who finds his series of lectures boring, and his disinterest in the course risks him failing. At the end of the lecture, Dr. Wright heads to the staff room, where he is handed a letter sent to him by Mother Gracia, the head of the prestigious Marhawa School. In the letter he learns that a student has been murdered by a cannibalistically-violent pupil, and immediately leaves the university to go on an impromptu three day leave to investigate. Bumping into Tozawa on his way out, Dr. Wright enlists his nephew in the investigation as an assistant, which he assures him will earn extra credit to pass the course. The two arrive by a chartered jet in the rainforest of Ellnaul, a region of Kudahnkan, and begin driving to the isolated school. Tozawa is confused about why his uncle took the spontaneous trip and, after two days of travel, Dr. Wright finally explains about the murder and it being related to suspected biological weaponry and, as a former partner of Gracia, he feels he should personally help out. When the two arrive at the school they are greeted by Bindi Bergara and Alisa Lin, the president and vice-president of the local student union, respectively, who have been briefed on Dr. Wright's visit. Tozawa is quickly taken by Bergara, who has mistaken his role as as student assistant as him being a child prodigy. Tozawa quickly takes notice of a cordoned-off area as he is led away.
Dr. Wight and Tozawa are introduced to Mother Gracia in her office. She leads the two down a staircase to an underground room where the zombified student is being held, chained to two beams. Dr. Wright quickly concludes the student has fallen victim to t-Virus infection. He recommends everyone on campus be vaccinated with Daylight, and that a BSAA force take part in containing any potential spread of the disease. As Dr. Wright is an adviser to the UN organisation, he can guarantee a fast response, but Gracia insists he handle the investigation entirely on his own to cover-up the incident. Forced to make do on their own, Dr. Wright has Tozawa search the campus for any sign of how the student got infected, but he cannot find a source. Tozawa is easily distracted by the female students who find his otherness enthralling, however, but is saved from a fight with their jealous male students by Lin. That evening, Tozawa reports his failure to find a source to his uncle, and expresses his concern that there is something untoward going on at the school beyond the murder.
Meanwhile, BSAA operators fire upon B.O.W.s and irregular mutants caused by a t-Virus outbreak. Alpha Team's leader, Captain Chris Redfield, fights Lickers and Zombie Dogs with Piers Nivans and Merah Biji. When the outbreak is contained, Biji tells the others she is to report the incident to Dr. Wright. Captain Redfield is familiar with the man, who previously offered assistance several years ago, and insists on joining her.
That night, Dr. Wight searches the school on his own for anything Tozawa missed. In doing so he is watched by a mysterious cloaked woman with a cube-shaped device. Back in their guest suite, Tozawa is woken up by Lin, who begins climbing on top of him in the bed. As she approaches, he realises she has also mutated by the viral infection and become a Zombie. He tries to escape her, but she succeeds in biting him on the shoulder.
