The Queen Leech was a mutant leech created through experimentation on annelids with the t-Virus. Created as part of Dr. James Marcus' ongoing leech study, it was his final creation before his death. In the time after, it consumed his hippocampus and gained his memories. Believing itself subsequently to be Marcus reborn, it sought revenge for his death.

The Queen Leech was one of the most uniquely grotesque monsters to emerge from experimentation with the t-Virus. The 'Queen Leech' was one of Dr. Marcus' pet leeches used in his experiments that began to grow a collective intelligence. After Marcus' death on the orders of Oswell E. Spencer, his 'queen' leech absorbed his hippocampus into its being, leading to it believing itself to be Marcus himself. Like the smaller Leeches it too was mimetic and could assume the appearance of Dr. Marcus, although to a far greater degree.

History
The Queen Leech was created in 1988 as part of Dr. Marcus' research into the t-Virus, the doctor having shifted Leech research from the Progenitor Virus. He was assassinated by an Umbrella security team during his experimentation, and the two were dumped into the underground river below his lab. The leech entered Marcus' body through his mouth and began eating his body from the inside. Eventually it worked its way to the hippocampus, where it absorbed his long-term memory. This began a process in which the remarkably-intelligent creature began to believe itself to be Marcus himself, somehow revived thanks to the Queen Leech. A religious man, the Queen Leech interpreted his spirituality as an explanation, comparing itself with Jesus Christ's resurrection in the Christian tradition.fact

Over the next ten years, the Leech developed the ability to change its body shape into that of Marcus'. In May 1998, the Queen Leech finally acted on its plan to avenge Marcus' death. Over the next few weeks, it manipulated an accident at the Arklay Laboratory, leading to the entire facility staff being infected with the ε strain, while their B.O.W.s escaped into the forest. Umbrella's investigation teams sent to evaluate the training school and laboratory for recommissioning were attacked and infected by leeches, as were the entire complement of a passenger train transporting Umbrella staff through the Arklays. Queen Leech's goal was to create a devastating viral outbreak that would ultimately spread across the world. In keeping with Marcus' Christianity, Queen Leech saw itself as Jesus Christ and judged the entire planet to be wicked and be condemned to Hell.

From Marcus' memories, the Queen Leech shaped its body to that of Marcus' teenage self. Remembering Marcus' demise, it now sought to avenge the doctor's death. Now ten years on from the death in 1998, the Queen Leech unleashed the t-Virus upon the Arklay Laboratory and the Research Center, and then attacked the Ecliptic Express, a personal company train devoted to luxuriously transporting Umbrella employees. The Leech then ran quickly back to the Research Center, where it taunted Albert Wesker and William Birkin through a camera feed in the broadcasting room, threatening his murderers that they would pay for their act of betrayal.

Death
During the night, the Leech showed a degree of interest in S.T.A.R.S. officer Rebecca Chambers and ex-Marine Second Lieutenant Billy Coen, who were slowly uncovering Marcus' human experiments and the conspiracy to assassinate him. Eventually it chose to confront them in the nearby water treatment plant.

After revealing details regarding "his" mortal demise, the Leech began to transform into its 'true' form. Although it was found to be impervious to small-arms fire, Rebecca and Billy managed to defeat it by exposing it to sunlight - its one weakness. With a single bullet, Billy was able to seriously injure the Queen Leech, resulting in it dropping down a chasm into an ongoing explosion.

Though the Queen did not live to see it, the events it had set in motion eventually led to Raccoon City's destruction and the deaths of Birkin and most of its population, along with the downfall of the Umbrella Corporation, which turned Spencer into one of the world's most wanted fugitives. Spencer and Wesker would eventually be tracked down and killed. This ensured Marcus had been avenged.

The Queen Leech (女王ヒル joō-hiru?) was a mutant leech created through experimentation on annelids with the t-Virus. Created as part of Dr. James Marcus' ongoing leech study, it was his final creation before his death. In the time after, it consumed his hippocampus and gained his memories. Believing itself subsequently to be Marcus reborn, it sought revenge for his death.

History

The Queen Leech was created in 1988 in a laboratory adjacent to Umbrella's executive training school in the Arklay Mountains. When Dr. Marcus was assassinated by the Umbrella Security Service, Queen Leech was dumped in a nearby treatment plant with his corpse. Seeing his body as a food source, Queen Leech began consuming it, and gained his memories after consuming the brain. It believed itself to be Marcus himself, reborn by divine intervention.

These attacks got the attention of Drs. Albert Wesker and William Birkin, who were in charge of the training school operation. The two quickly recognised Queen Leech as a serious threat to the company and made preparations to destroy the facility.[1] In the meantime, Queen Leech's attention was focused on S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and former Marine Second Lieutenant Billy Coen, who found their way in the training school when the train crashed into the underground station beneath it. Queen Leech eventually saw no other way than directly confronting the two after they survived repeated attacks from Marcus' B.O.W.s.[2][3] It abandoned its human form and transformed into its natural state, a large green monster. The fighting went awry when it accidentally revealed to Billy its sensitivity to sunlight.[4] Distracted by the opening of a shutter, Billy fired at Queen Leech with a high power magnum, and its body fell down an elevator shaft where it was consumed by fire as Dr. Birkin set off the self-destruct.[5]

Legacy

The Queen Leech's transformation in its last moments was eventually found out by Wesker some time after the events at the Umbrella Executive Training School, which led to his theorisation of a connection between Progenitor Virus mutations and the psychology of the infected.[6]
