Rain Ocampo was a member of an Umbrella special forces commando unit. During the outbreak in Hive, she and the other operatives were sent down into the underground facility to contain the infection. Rain was later cloned for experimentation by the Red Queen in Resident Evil: Retribution.[1]

Biography

The following section contains information that appears in the Resident Evil novelizations, which have been classified as non-canon from the primary movieverse

Rain was extremely volatile and confrontational personality; she used to be a member of the Los Angeles Police Department and had to prove her worth to the other members because of prejudices against her gender, thinking that a woman would not be good a policeman.

She was given an offer by Major Timothy Cain to join the force. She accepted due to her gender keeping her from being accepted in any SWAT teams. Rain was one of only two female members of One's commando team that went to The Hive to deactivate the homicidal Red Queen, the other being Olga Danilova.

The Hive

Rain 35

Rain after killing the "survivor".

She was the group's most skilled marksman, and had at least one close friend in J.D. Salinas. She did not like Chad Kaplan, the only member of the group who had never seen action, and grew to blame him for the deaths caused by the Red Queen when he thought she had no more defensive abilities.

She, Matt Addison, and J.D. encountered the first zombie, who they thought was a crazed survivor. The infected woman attacked Rain, and Rain was bitten savagely on the hand, thus becoming infected with the t-Virus. She and J.D. soon shot the woman several times but scored no headshots, leaving the zombie still standing. Rain and Matt Addison were attacked by a horde of zombies while waiting for their teammates. She sustained more bites over the course of the survivors' escape from the Hive, speeding up the rate of infection.

A tough young woman from the beginning, Rain was still determined to prove her worth as a valuable asset to the team of survivors. She taunted the zombies often and killed many of them, but was bit again when hesitating upon seeing a zombified J.D. After he bit her, she finally decided to put him out of his misery.

At the brink of leaving the Hive, they were forced to restart the Red Queen in the hopes that she would provide them with the information necessary to escape. The Red Queen promised to provide them with the four-digit access code only on the condition that Alice would kill Rain, which would keep the infection from escaping the Hive.

The Queen conjectured that the time elapsed since Rain's infection would drastically lessen the effectiveness of the serum, thus she would not allow Alice and the remaining survivors to leave, even though the anti-virus remained in a suitcase on a platform outside of the room they were trapped in.

A zombified Rain

Alice refused to comply with the Red Queen and silenced the Queen's urging to murder Rain with the blow of an Axe to the security monitor she was speaking from. They would have remained locked in the room had Kaplan (thought dead) not fried the Queen's circuitry, which unlocked all doors in the facility.

Rain and the other survivors managed to reach the train. Alice administered the anti-virus to her and hoped it would work. However, their troubles were not over yet, as they were forced to fight with the now mutated Licker. During their fight, Rain transformed into a zombie and lunged to attack, and Matt was forced to shoot her in the head, killing her instantly.

Retribution

A clone of Rain

Michelle Rodriguez (alongside Colin Salmon[2] and Oded Fehr) will reprise her role as Rain in Resident Evil: Retribution. Unlike her comrades, there are two clones of Rain, who of which have been dubbed "Good Rain" and "Bad Rain". Rodriguez explains "Bad Rain" as "mechanical, very straight-forward and very matter-of-fact" and "Good Rain" as "awkward and different- someone who is quirky and doesn’t know how to handle a gun and someone who is curious.[3]"According to an interview with the producers and director Paul W.S. Anderson, she, One and Carlos Olivera were "brought back from the dead" by Umbrella through means of cloning.

Good Rain

“Good Rain” is a young woman living the suburban simulation of Raccoon City, unaware of her nature as a clone. According to Michelle Rodriguez, this version of Rain is much more “feminine” version of her original character, placing emphasis on the fact that she “wears stiletto heels” and is also a vegan and a devout supporter of gun control. She expresses her dislike for guns, purporting proudly to have stood against the NRA when the real Alice teaches her how to use a weapon.

When the simulation of the outbreak in the neighborhood begins, Rain encounters Alice and her daughter Becky as the two are trying to escape the horde of undead besieging their home. Rain nearly runs them over in her own attempt to escape, but allows them into the car. She appears to have a better grasp on the situation around her than the Alice clone and her daughter, recognizing that the people attacking them are “not human”. During their escape the car is blindsided by a truck that overturns her car. The Alice clone and Becky assume Rain was killed in the crash and escape the wreckage as Rain regains consciousness.

Rain managed to escape her car and leave the suburban simulation. She encounters the original Alice and Becky in the Russian subway, confused by the presence of the country’s orthographic spelling. Alice quickly teaches her how to use a gun and orders Becky to remain with Rain until she returns. Rain becomes the temporary protector the child, leading her someplace safe to hide until Alice returned. She is baffled by Becky’s comment about meeting “her sister” (referring to the Rain clone working alongside Jill Valentine); Alice returns with Luther, Barry and Leon and the six of them decide to travel the subway tunnels to the escape route. Their escape from the facility is stopped when the power is cut; Rain is unable to protect Becky when she is captured by a Licker. She tries to kill the monster only to be swept from the elevator platform; she lands hard on the ground and dies when her neck snaps against the pillar she collides with.

Bad Rain

“Bad Rain” is another clone of the original Rain Ocampo working alongside the brainwashed Jill Valentine and the clones of Carlos Oilvera and One. She has no apparent memories of her counterpart’s experiences and never recognizes Alice as a friend. Rain serves as the primary muscle behind Valentine’s strike team, taking lead point and initiating all attacks when the team encounters Alice and the other survivors.

In the suburban Raccoon City simulation, Rain and the others corner Alice and Ada Wong in the house where Becky was hiding. She and the team manage to capture Ada who remains behind to stall them long enough for Alice and Becky to escape and find a way out.

Rain and the team later reach the section of the facility where the elevator is located and, along with the captured Ada, attack the survivors during their attempt to escape. Rain uses Ada as bait to lure Barry out into the open. Knowing better than to trust them, however, Barry shoots One and is shot several times by Rain and the others, resulting his death.

The battle ended when the denotation occurs, flooding the facility. Rain, Jill and Ada managed to survive, boarding a submarine to chase after Leon, Alice, Becky and Luther West. Rain and Jill manage to catch up Leon's team, the emergence of the submarine from the water overturning the vehicle that the others were using to escape. Rain injects herself with "Las Plaga" parasite, giving her extraordinary regenerative capability, enhanced endurance, and strength. When Luther West and Leon open fire at her, she sustains heavy injury include even head shots, but heals and disperses the bullets through her fingertips.

Her enhanced endurance came into play when Luther swings a fire extinguisher at her skull, which fails to have any impact on her. Rain's enhanced strength and fighting capability allows her to take on and defeat both Luther West and Leon. She ends up breaking the bone of Leon's arm and stopping the heartbeat of Luther West with a strike at his chest, killing him instantly.

Alice joins the injured Leon in fighting Rain, but is bested just as easily, though she survives the blow to the chest that killed Luther. Rain believes she is unbeatable and Alice capitalizes on Rain’s arrogance. She opens fire at the ice where Rain is standing. Rain falls into the freezing water and meets an apparent end at the hand of the zombies who overwhelm her, dragging her deeper under water.

Zombie Rain

In a deleted scene, Ada and Alice encounter a zombie clone of Rain in the New York simulation. She charged them from the left, emerging from an alley and attempted to blindside Alice. Alice reacts quickly enough that she kills the clone with a shot to the head.[4]

Skills and abilities

Rain's role as the group's most skilled marksman is shown several times through out the film. In Retribution a clone dubbed as "Bad Rain" maintains the original Rain's skills as a marksman.

Later when "Bad Rain" injects herself with the Las Plagas parasite she is able to survive multiple gunshots and withstand a hit in the face by a fire extinguisher being stunned for a few seconds, her strength has also increased as shown by Rain being able to break Leon's arm and crush Luther's rib cage stopping his heart in seconds.

Appearance and wardrobe

Resident Evil

Rain wears a black short sleeved t-shirt with a round neck. Over this she wears a heavy duty black jacket. Her jacket has her name on the left side and a logo on the left arm that reads "SANITATION". It's quite hard to see in these shots, but I'm pretty sure that's what it says. She also wears black combat pants over big black boots. On her right wrist she has a huge black watch. At different times in the film she wears different things over this basic uniform. She wears a gas mask, a welding mask and numerous rigs with straps for weapons, including a knife at her right thigh and a torch. One of these rigs, or perhaps her jacket, has an "S" logo on it. She also sometimes wears large padded gloves. Her communication gear is often around her neck rather than in her ear.

Her dark hair is pulled into a ponytail with straps all the way down it. There are loose strands of hair around her face.

Resident Evil: Retribution

Bad Rain

The "Bad Rain" clone wears a dark shirt, which is covered by a black bulletproof vest, with purple lining. She is seen wearing gloves. She wears a fashionable black belt and leather tights with purple lining. In contrast to "Good Rain" she wears Doctor Martin boots. Her hair is similar to the original Rain.

Good Rain

The "Good Rain" clone wears a stylish thin gray T-shirt with elaborate designs, which is covered by a short tan jacket. She wears long skinny grey jeans and, unfortunately, wears gorgeous grey pump heels. Her dark hair is loose flowing past her shoulders. During her last moment her hair is messy and when she dies, her hair is organized.

Zombie Rain

The zombie clone Rain wears a long dark dress.

Her hair is loose and seems to have a certain style.
