"With that girl as the very source, your United States, and then the entire world shall overflow with his grace. For that is the iron will of my master, the most holy Lord Saddler!"
— Ramón Salazar[2]

Ramón Salazar (ラモン・サラザール Ramon Sarazāru?) was a Spanish nobleman from Valdelobos. A descendent of the 15th century noble warrior, Gregorio Salazar I, Ramón inherited the position of castellano alongside his peerage, a duty more important to the family than the peerage itself. As the 21st century came about, Salazar left his Catholic faith behind and converted to Los Iluminados, a cult led by Osmund Saddler, who had access to bioweapons research and was interested in Las Plagas. Although his diminutive stature resembled that of a ten-year-old, and his grey hair and wrinkled face gave him the appearance of an elderly man, he was only 20 years old.[3][excerpt 1]

The Salazar coat of arms

Ramon Salazar is the son of Diego Salazar, 7th Count of Valdelobos and Catalina Salazar. Throughout his childhood, Ramon suffered an illness in which he is not expected to live to adulthood much to Catalina's horror who had invited the "Devil" into their homes in an attempt to save his life against her husband's wishes.[4] The cultists treats Ramón's disease by parasitizing him with a dominant species of Plaga. Soon after, Diego is mysteriously murdered with Catalina disappearing shortly afterwards, leaving their son an orphan. Having no other relatives, he inherited his family's castle at a young age.[4] In his adolescent years, Ramon develops a sense of cruelty when he overhears an servant mocking him with the word "Pulgarcito" and invites her to his chambers, where he forces her to kneel before pouring vitriol on her face, melting her skin off.[5] His notoriety and unpleasant personality may be very well attributed to his unpopularity among his subjects in stark contrast of his more beloved ancestor, the first castellan.[6]

As time passes, Salazar's cruelty and treachery strengthens and the cult soon learns that they can prey on him. Taking advantage of the castellan's young and isolated state, Osmund Saddler approached Salazar and provided him with insight into Los Iluminados, a modern continuation of the ancient cult stamped out by Salazar's ancestor. Salazar fully accepted Saddler's claim to being a Prophet and comes to see Saddler as his real father over time.[7] The mythology of Los Iluminados considered Salazar's family to be tainted by sin ever since the first castellan sealed the Plagas in the ruins his castle was built around. Salazar was determined to atone for this 'sin', and hired a workforce from the nearby village to excavate the ancient ruins formerly sealed off. The parasites were expected to be long dead, and the discovery of their remains encased in amber suggested as much. During this, a few of villagers involved in the excavation broke some portion of unearth Plaga amber by mistake, leading them to be exposed to the parasites' dormant, fine spores within, which over a period of several years regenerated into fully-formed Plaga bodies.[8] The revelation of what transpired not only delighted Los Iluminados, but also prompted everyone to exercise more caution in recovering the rest of Plaga amber deposits.[9]

Afterwards, Los Iluminados' research team began experimenting on rejuvenated Plagas. Along with uncovering the parasites' susceptibility to ultraviolet (UV) radiation which must be overcome,[10] experiments said team conducted also meant to create more formidable Plaga hosts[11][12][13][14][15][16] and genetically modified Dominant Species Plagas[17][18] Salazar was granted with one of Dominant Species Plagas, granting him full control over his body as well as the ability to control rank-and-file hosts, along with armed force of Cultists and two cloaked bodyguards under his command. He was also in charge of protecting the Queen Plaga, a large creature which asexually reproduced new Plagas constantly and could merge with if situation called for it.

RE4R-SalazarIntroduction

Salazar introduces himself to Leon and Ashley.

"A most warm welcome to my castle, Mr. Kennedy."
— Ramón Salazar[2]

Salazar makes his presence known when Leon and Ashley were looking for a way to escape the castle. When he demanded Leon that he hand over Ashley, the US agent refused to do so. Nonetheless, refusing to give up, Salazar declares that Los Iluminados must have Ashley and reveals that with her as the source, due to being infected with a Plagas, then the United States and eventually the world will be overcome with the grace of Osmund Saddler. When he asked the two if they will accept, Ashley firmly rebuffed it. Disappointed by this, he summons a group of Ganados Zealots to kill Leon before departing with his verdugo bodyguards.[2]

Later, as Leon traverses through the castle, Salazar calls him via wired phone, and asks him if he is ready to hand over Ashley, which only annoys Leon. The castellan then proceeded to put on mocking entertainment that the "gallant knight protects the princess fair", which made Ashley uneasy. Later, after Ashley was captured, Salazar speaks to him through a speaker, sardonically mocking him over losing his "companion".

When Leon reached the throne room, Salazar is seen sitting on his throne. After Leon was subdued by one of the cloaked verdugos, Salazar orders his zealots to force Ashley to drink a black substance and callously urges the girl to not resist as it would only worsened her suffering. Before the verdugo would throw Leon into a deep well, Salazar sadistically bids him farewell in Spanish. After Leon survived, and ventured to a part of the castle to rescue Ashley, Salazar was rencountered and the castellan expressed annoyance that Leon will not yield. He then sent two Ganados archers to remove the agent from the castle.

Salazar was later spied on by Leon, who watches through binoculars as the Castellan and his zealots escort Ashley to a chamber. Meeting with Jack Krauser, Ramon immediately hands the girl over to him. When Leon arrived too late to save Ashley, Salazar proceeded to mock him but was inflicted with several wounds by Leon. This caused Salazar to mutate into a hideous monster with his deformed human body appearing in the mouth, as he had merged with the Queen Plaga, which was hidden somewhere nearby. During an ensuing battle, though the castellan tried to kill Leon, he however, instead met his own defeat at the hands of the agent. In his dying moments, Salazar cried out to Lord Saddler begging for help, but he ultimately succumbed to his wounds and dies, allowing Leon to continue further.
