Reapers are an insectoid B.O.W, resembling giant humanoid cockroaches. Standing upright at around 7', they have 4 upper body claws they use as arms, and 2 legs. Shooting off these appendages will cripple the reaper, the removal of an arm stopping it from using its instant kill grab. However, Reapers are capable of regenerating limbs extremely quickly, taking only a couple seconds to repair a head, arm, or leg.

The only two ways to kill a Reaper are to shoot the glowing abdominal sac when the armor plating shifts off to vent gas, or by hitting the Reaper with explosives powerful enough to obliterate its body completely (which usually means that only a well-placed rocket will do the job). The Reaper also has 2 glowing sacs on its back, which when both destroyed (a Grenade Launcher seems to work fairly well if you have trouble targeting it) stuns the Reaper and forces it to prominently reveal its abdominal weak point.

The Reaper gets its name and appearence from European personifications of Death. The name is taken from the English name for it, the "Grim Reaper", Grim itself is a guise of Odin in germanic folklore. Its arms are related to the scythe sometimes carried by the Welsh personification, the "Angeu". The creatures thin, skeletal body is based on Skeletalisation, the final stage of death in which the remaining body tissue is completely decomposed.

The Reaper attacks primarily by using its upper claws to grab a target, and the middle scything talons to repeatedly puncture and shred the victims abdomen, killing them instantly. When one of its body claws are destroyed, the Reaper can still counterattack by slicing with its remaining appendages. The Reaper can quickly close distance on enemies by crawling on its 6 appendages, however, while doing so it cannot attack and reveals its two glowing back sacs.

Reapers vent noxious gases from their dorsal and abdominal sacs while showing their weakpoints, creating a blur effect that acts as a simple yet effective form of cloak, making difficult to aim at their vitals.

Fire is extremely ineffective against a Reaper, as incendiary grenades cannot damage a Reapers weak points, remove its limbs, or slow it down in any way. However, it is possible to kill a Reaper by exposing it to constant, intense heat, such as leading it into an incinerator.

After a Reaper has been killed, a Heart-cut Topaz (Power Stone) can be found on their corpse, which sells for ₦5,000.

On a side note, while similar to the old Chimera, Reapers are not part of any project, neither from Umbrella nor from TriCell. They were, in fact, a completely random and unprecedented mutation of mere cockroaches, which came in contact with the Uroboros virus when a fire broke out in the missile bay of Tricell's facility. The researchers named the beasts "Reapers" when whole squads of armed Majinis were sent to capture a specimen and were torn apart, as if disemboweled by scythes or spears.

you will see them about about 5 or 6 times in the game you would see a lot of them on chapter 5-1 to 5-2. with the last two togather when you open the bulkhead door if you take to long and do not kill them all the two gatling gun majini will appear and add to the challenge as well as some base majini.

Attacks

Impale: This is there most common attack and what players call an "annoying" attack they have. This attack happens if Chris Redfield or partner Sheva Alomar are within range. If all limpets are not there they can not instant kill you.

Regular Attack: They use this when they have one or more of there limpets removed while its not as deadly as the one above this takes a fair amount of damage.

Trivia

  • Players frequently describe the Reaper as the most annoying enemy in Resident Evil 5 due to their incredible durability and the frequency with which they attempt their one-hit-kill attack.
  • In 5-3, if you ignore the Reaper after it first comes out and head straight for the second one, they can actually corner you. If this happens you have no choice but to either kill one (which is hard if you do Normal and up) or let it Impale you. If you are very lucky the Reaper will do it's regular attack which it causes 100 damage, it's not an instant kill.
